GREENSBORO, N.C. – 18-year UNCG men’s golf head coach Terrance Stewart has announced a challenging, 2018-19 national schedule for the reigning Southern Conference Champions, highlighted by hosting two events this season with one at Grandover Resort and another in Palm City, Fla for the second-straight season.
“Our schedule will prepare the team once again to compete for a SoCon Championship and a run in the NCAA Tournament,” Stewart said.
The Spartans open the year at the Rod Myers Invitational hosted by Duke at the Duke Golf Club on Sept. 8-9. UNCG then travels out of state for the first time to the Windon Memorial Classic hosted by Northwestern on Sept. 23-24 at Knollwood Club in Lake Forest, Illinois.
UNCG returns back in-state for the Wolfpack Fall Intercollegiate Oct. 8-9 at the Lonnie Poole GC. Back in action the following week, the Spartans will make their eighth-straight appearance in the Auto Trader Collegiate (Duluth, Georgia) hosted by Georgia State at the Berkeley Hills CC on Oct. 15-16.
The Spartans wrap up the fall season hosting the 14th-annual UNCG Grandover Collegiate Oct. 27-28. This marks the seventh-straight year UNCG has hosted the tournament at the Grandover Resort. Joining the Spartans in the field includes Duke, ECU, Liberty, Mercer, Michigan State, Northwestern, Penn State, Rutgers, Chattanooga, VCU and Virginia Tech.
UNCG opens the spring portion of the schedule by hosting their second-ever event in the Sunshine State when they welcome in 12 teams in Palm City, Florida, for the UNCG Banyan Creek Collegiate on Feb. 10-12. The three-day, 54-hole event will feature Appalachian State, Boston College, James Madison, Mercer, Seton Hall, Lehigh, Purdue Fort Wayne, Samford, South Dakota, Chattanooga, VCU and Villanova.
UNCG returns to the Puerto Rico Classic hosted by Purdue at the Rio Mar Golf Course Feb. 17-19 and the Linger Longer Invitational hosted by Mercer at Reynolds Plantation (March 15-17). The Spartans will have their last in-state tournament of the regular season March 23-24 when they travel to the Finely Golf Course for the annual Tar Heel Intercollegiate. The regular season ends on April 6-7 with the Irish Creek Collegiate hosted by Charlotte in Kannapolis.
The 2019 Southern Conference Championships will again be held in Pinehurst this season with the three-day event running April 21-23 on the Pinehurst #9 course. This will be the sixth-straight year the event has been held at Pinehurst #9.
The 2019 NCAA Regionals will be played May 12-15 at six different sites across the country. Sites include the Louisville Golf Club, Stanford Golf Course, Georgia Golf Course, Palouse Ridge Golf Club (Washington State), TPC Myrtle Beach (Coastal Carolina) and The Harvester Golf Club (Iowa State).
Last season UNCG won the SoCon Championship for the first time in program history by five strokes after finishing as runner-up the previous three years. The conference title clinched the program’s second NCAA appearance after earning an at-large bid in 2013-14.
Nick Lyerly became the second Spartan to win the SoCon Individual Championship, turning in a 4-under 212 (73-70-69) for the only sub-par score in the field. Lyerly won SoCon Freshman of the Year, making it five out of the past six years a Spartan has garnered the award.
UNCG returns six of their top-eight golfers from last year, including all-conference selections Lyerly and Bryce Hendrix. Hendrix had the fourth-lowest stroke average (72.75) in the conference last season while Lyerly was one spot below him at 72.89.
