KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – UNCG men’s golf turned in a team score of 14-over 298 in the final round to finish in fifth-place at 23-over-par 875 (285-292-298) in the Irish Creek Intercollegiate co-hosted by Davidson and Charlotte on the Par 71, 7,099-yard The Club at Irish Creek. Junior Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) had the best individual finish for UNCG with a two-over 215 (71-69-75).

The 15-team and 88-individual field featured four teams in the Top-35, six in the top-100 and eight individuals in the top-100: Akron, No. 15 Clemson, Dartmouth, Dayton, No. 4 Georgia Tech, Indiana, No. 35 Kansas, No. 64 Middle Tennessee State, No. 29 North Florida and No. 99 West Virginia.

Leading the field after the first two rounds, Clemson remained in first-place with a team score of seven-over 859 (277-288-294). North Florida (291-289-281) came in second-place seven strokes behind, and Georgia Tech was third at 15-over 867 (277-297-293). Kansas (285-297-292) was one stroke ahead of UNCG for fourth place.

No. 45 Turk Pettit of Clemson was the individual medalist, finishing the tournament with a four-under 209 (66-70-73). Indiana’s Jake Brown (74-66-72) came in second place three strokes behind, and Kansas’ Daniel Sutton was the only other golfer not to be above-par with an even-par 213 (70-72-71). Conor Purcell (67-78-70) of Charlotte tied with Hendrix for sixth-place.

Freshman Nick Lyerly (Salisbury, N.C./East Rowan) tied for 20th-place at six-over 219 (71-76-72) and had just two bogeys in the final round for the Spartans’ lowest round score. Sophomore Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) (72-71-77) finished one stroke behind for a tie in 24th-place. Senior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) (71-76-74) was one stroke behind Brightwell to tie for 30th place.

Sophomore Grant Powell (Colfax, N.C./Greensboro College) registered a 23-over 236 (77-80-79) for a tie in 75th place. 

With the regular season concluded, UNCG will resume play in two weeks with the Southern Conference Championships on April 22-24 at Pinehurst #9.
