GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf finished 11th at the Tiger Invitational hosted by Auburn at the Grand National Lake Course at the three-day, 54-hole event. Freshman Nick Lyerly (Salisbury, N.C./East Rowan) paced the way with a 16th place finish overall in the field.
The Spartans finished at 16-over par 880, with rounds of 293-296-291, finishing with its lowest round of the week Tuesday. Host Auburn ran away from the field, posting a 25-under par 839, winning by 25 strokes over second-place Georgia State at even-par 864. David Kocher of Maryland won the individual title with an 11-under par 205 (67-69-69).
Lyerly was the Spartans’ top finisher with a 1-under par 215 score placing 16th overall. Lyerly opened with a 2-over par 74 in round one before posting back-to-back rounds under par. He recorded a 1-under par 71 Monday and capped the week with a 2-under par 70 in round three. He posted a team-high six birdies Tuesday to go along with four bogeys and eight pars.
Senior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) continued his strong play, finishing 23rd overall with a 1-over par 217. Stockwell opened with a 1-over par 73 in round one before turning in consecutive rounds of even-par 72. He notched three birdies, three bogeys and 12 par scores in the final round.
Junior Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) finished in a tie for 38th overall at 5-over par 221. Hendrix carded two rounds of even-par 72, in the first and third round, surrounded by a 5-over par 77 in round two. He posted four birdies, four bogeys and 10 par scores.
Sophomore Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) placed 74th overall with a 13-over par 229. Brightwell carded rounds of 74-76-74 on the week. Senior Joseph Cansler (Clemmons, N.C./Surry CC) rounded out the lineup in 81st place with an 18-over par 234 (77-80-77).
