GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team sits in fourth place, just two strokes out of the lead after the first round of the Martin Downs Collegiate hosted by the Spartans in Palm City, Fla., on the Osprey Creek Course at the Martin Downs Golf Club. The Spartans will tee off in round two from hole No. 1 between 8:20-9:00 a.m. Monday with live scoring available at www.golfstatresults.com.
The Spartans posted a first round score of 1-over 289 on the 6,802-yard, par-72 course Sunday, placing fourth overall. Seton Hall and Elon are tied for the top spot after posting rounds of 1-under par 287 while Boston College is alone in third place with an even-par 288. William Harwood of Elon has the individual lead at 6-under par 66 while Gregor Tait of Seton Hall is second at 5-under par 67.
Junior Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) was the Spartans’ top finisher, sitting at 1-under par 71 in a tie for eighth place overall. Hendrix posted 11 par scores, three bogeys and four birdies on the afternoon. He closed his round with back-to-back birdies on holes No. 17-18.
Sophomore Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) is just one-shot back in a tie for 12th overall after carding an even-par 72 in round one. Brightwell started strong, posting eight pars and a birdie on the font nine. His back nine was up-and-down with three pars, three birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey. He leads the field in par-3 scoring, going 2-under par on the day.
Seniors Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) and Joseph Cansler (Clemmons, N.C./Surry CC) are tied for 18th overall at 1-over par 73. Stockwell carded 11 pars, four bogeys and three birdies on the day with all three of his birdies coming on the front nine. Cansler had the same stats on the day with 11 pars, four bogeys and three birdies but he carded 1-over par on the back nine.
Freshman Nick Lyerly (Salisbury, N.C./East Rowan) rounded out the lineup in a tie for 34th place with a 4-over par 76. Lyerly carded 12 par scores on the day but only had one birdie on hole No. 3 to go along with five bogeys.
The Spartans played three individuals in the event with sophomores Ben Buben (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) and Grant Powell (Colfax, N.C./Greensboro College) leading the way at 4-over par 76. Buben posted two birdies on the day while Powell carded four birdies in his first round at the NCAA Division I level. Sophomore Michael Wicker (Rougemount, N.C./North Durham) rounded out the scoring with a 9-over par 81 to finish in a tie for 59th place.
Joining the Spartans in the field includes Mercer, Western Carolina, Seton Hall, Elon, George Mason, Lehigh, Boston College, West Virginia and James Madison.
