Men's Golf Hosts Martin Downs Collegiate In Florida Beginning Sunday
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team hosts its first-ever tournament in the Sunshine State as the Spartans welcome in nine teams for the Martin Downs Collegiate in Palm City, Fla., on the east coast of the state. The three-day, 54-hole event will begin Sunday with tee times from 7:30 a.m.-9 a.m. on the Osprey Creek course at the Martin Downs Golf Club. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatresults.com and the Spartans are set to begin on hole No. 1 from 7:30-8:10 a.m.
Joining the Spartans in the field includes Mercer, Western Carolina, Seton Hall, Elon, George Mason, Lehigh, Boston College, West Virginia and James Madison. This is the first tournament of the spring season for the Spartans. UNCG led the Southern Conference in the fall with five top-5 finishes as a team and posted a 294.07 team stroke average.
Junior Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) leads the Spartans into the week with a 73.13 stroke average on the year, ranking ninth in the SoCon. He posted a third place finish at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate in the fall, recording a 12-under par 204 with rounds of 70-65-69.
Freshman Nick Lyerly (Salisbury, N.C./East Rowan) turned in the Spartans’ second-lowest stroke average in the fall, notching a 73.47 to rank 14th in the league. His stroke average is the third-lowest among all league freshmen. He finished the fall with back-to-back top 20 finishes, placing 19th at the AutoTrader Intercollegiate and 17th at the UNCG/Grandover Collegiate.
Sophomore Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) was the top Spartan in qualifying this spring after recording a 74.93 stroke average in the fall. Brightwell’s top finish in the fall came at the Wolfpack Fall Collegiate, placing 28th overall.
Seniors Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) and Joseph Cansler (Clemmons, N.C./Surry CC) round out the Spartans’ lineup in Florida. Stockwell posted a 74.87 stroke average in all fall events, including a 24th-place finish a the UNCG Grandover Collegiate. Cansler tallied a 74.56 stroke average in nine rounds this fall, placing 26th at UNCG Grandover and 23rd at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate.
The Spartans will play three individuals this week at the Martin Downs Collegiate. Sophomore Grant Powell (Colfax, N.C./Greensboro College) will make his first appearance as a Spartan this year after transferring in from Greensboro College at semester break. Powell was 15th in NCAA Division III in the fall with a 73.20 stroke average.
Sophomore Ben Buben (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) posted a 76.93 stroke average in 15 rounds during the fall. Sophomore Michael Wicker (Rougemount, N.C./North Durham) turned in a 79.00 stroke average in 12 rounds in the fall.
