GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG men’s golf head coach Terrance Stewart announced the addition of local standout Grant Powell (Colfax, N.C./Northwest Guilford) to the team after transferring in from Greensboro College. Powell will be immediately eligible to play for the Spartans this spring.

“We are very excited to have Grant join our program,” Stewart said. “He has been a true student-athlete with a 3.4 GPA in business at Greensboro College. He has been a winner throughout his career, winning several collegiate events at the NCAA Division III level and in junior golf. Those experience will serve him very well here at UNCG.”

Powell, who will be a sophomore at UNCG, played three semesters for the Pride at Greensboro College. Last year, the Golf Coaches Association of American named him the Phil Michelson Outstanding Freshman Award winner in the country and he was named Ping Third Team All-America by the GCAA. He posted seven top-20 finishes as a freshman, including winning the Transylvania Fall Invitational and posting a runner-up finish at the Jekyll Island Intercollegiate.

Powell was named First Team All-Region and was named the USA South Atlantic Conference Freshman of the Year. He helped the Pride finish fourth in the NCAA Division III National Championships last spring and finished the year ranked No. 19 in the country by Golf Stat. He posted a 73.9 stroke average in 11 events last season.

Powell won the Transylvania Fall Invitational this fall to open his sophomore campaign, posting a 6-under par 138. He placed second overall at the O’Briant-Jensen Memorial to close out the fall season. He finished the fall with a 73.2 stroke average in 12 rounds, ranking 15th in the national in NCAA Division III this year.

Powell played locally at Northwest Guilford High School for coach Ron Bare. He led the Vikings to three Piedmont Triad 4A Conference titles in his career. He was named the Conference Player of the Year and was a two-time All-Conference selection. He won the 2016 NC Junior Boys Match-Play Championship while posting four other wins and five runner-up finishes in the junior golf in the 2015-16 Tar Heel Junior Golf Tour. He was named the Golf Pride MVP and the Player of the Year on the tour.
