GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s golf team moved up to fifth place overall at the annual UNCG Grandover Collegiate Sunday, surpassing a couple of nationally-ranked teams in Georgia State (73) and Virginia Tech (79) in the final round hosted at the Grandover Resort East Course.
The Spartans posted their lowest round of the weekend Sunday, recording a 292 to finish at 31-over par 895 (299-304-292) to place fifth overall. UNCG placed in front of Georgia State by two strokes and Virginia Tech by three strokes. No. 56 Northwestern came from behind and won the team title with a 9-over par 873, posting rounds of 296-291-286. No. 24 North Carolina finished second at 11-over par 875 (297-285-293) and No. 28 Duke finished third at 15-over par 879 (288-298-293). Dylan Wu of Northwestern won the individual by four strokes with a 7-under par 209 (69-70-70).
Freshman Nick Lyerly (Salisbury, N.C./East Rowan) was the Spartans’ top finisher, placing a career-best 17th overall in the field. Lyerly posted a 7-over par 223, improving each round with scores of 78-76-69. His 3-under par 69 in the final round is a career-low as he posted four birdies, one bogey and 13 par scores. He finished the weekend tied for first in the field with 39 par scores in 54-holes.
Senior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Southern Pines) finished up in 24th place overall with a 9-over par 225 score. Stockwell opened the week with a 3-over par 75 in round one and a 1-over par 73 in round two. He carded a 5-over par 77 in round three and finished the weekend tied for first in the field with 39 total pars.
Junior Bryce Hendrix (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) and senior Joseph Cansler (Clemmons, N.C./Surry CC) are tied for 26th overall at 10-over par 226. Hendrix opened the weekend with a 1-over par 73 in round one before a 7-over par 79 in round two. He closed out the week with a 2-over par 74 in round three, posting three birdies and 11 par scores. Cansler opened his week with a 1-over par 73 in round one before posting an 81 in round two. He rebounded with an even-par 72 in round three, recording four birdies, four bogeys and 10 par scores. Cansler was second in the field with 10 total birdies in 54-holes.
Sophomore Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) rounded out the lineup in 59th place overall with a 20-over par 236. Brightwell posted rounds of 82-76-78 on the weekend.
The Spartans played four individuals on the weekend with sophomore Ben Buben (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) leading the way in 46th place overall. Buben recorded a 15-over par 231 with rounds of 82-73-76. Freshman Justin Emmons (Climax, N.C./Providence Grove) and Michael Wicker (Rougemount, N.C./North Durham) placed 66th overall in the field with a 24-over par 240. Wicker recorded rounds of 78-83-79 while Emmons carded rounds of 80-81-79. Redshirt freshman Regan Erhardt (Kernersville, N.C./Bishop McGuiness) closed out the field with a 38-over par 254 (85-88-81) in 75th place.
Joining the Spartans in the field includes No. 24 North Carolina, No. 28 Duke, No. 79 Virginia Tech, No. 73 Georgia State, Kansas State, VCU, No. 31 N.C. State, No. 56 Northwestern and Loyola (Md.).
