GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men's golf team heads down to Pinehurst this weekend for the 2017 Southern Conference Championships, held at Pinehurst No. 9. Due to inclement weather, the teams will try to play 36-holes Sunday and then play the final round either Monday or Tuesday depending on weather. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatresults.com and at www.uncgspartans.com.

The Spartans enter the tournament as the top ranked team in the SoCon in the latest Golf Week rankings, coming in at No. 87 in the country. UNCG has finished first or second the past two years at the SoCon Championships and has been in the top three the last three years. Last season, the Spartans finished in second place, just one shot behind East Tennessee State for the title. In 2015, the Spartans and Bucs finished in a tie for first place with UNCG falling in the first hole of the playoff.

UNCG enters the weekend with the lowest scoring average as a team in the SoCon at 289.07. The Spartans have finished in sixth place in three straight tournaments – accomplishing the feat at the Linger Longer Invitational, Irish Creek Collegiate and the Wolfpack Spring Open.  The Spartans' No. 87 ranking is the highest in the SoCon, while Chattanooga is second at No. 95 and ETSU is third at No. 116.

Hendrix finished 14th last season at the SoCon Championships on his way to the SoCon Freshman of the Year honor.

Junior Josh Stockwell (Aberdeen, N.C./Pinecrest) returns to Pinehurst No. 9 with confidence as he has finished in the top 12 in his first two years of the SoCon Championships. Stockwell placed seventh overall in last year's event and was 12th as a freshman in 2015. He closed out this year second on the team and seventh in the SoCon with a 72.61 stroke average. He tallied four top-30 finishes on the year, including a pair of 18th-place showings at the VCU Shootout and the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate.

Brightwell ranks 10th in the SoCon and leads all league freshmen with a 72.96 stroke average. He finished the year with three straight top-20 finishes, beginning with a 15th place showing at the Linger Longer. He earned his first weekly honor after placing 19th at Irish Creek and tallied his second with a seventh-place performance at the Wolfpack Spring Open. Brightwell tied the UNCG single-round record with a 63 in round two at the Wolfpack.

Junior Joseph Cansler (Clemmons, N.C./Surry CC) finished the year ranked 13th in the SoCon and fourth on the team with a 73.61 stroke average. He posted an 18th-place finish at the VCU Shootout in the fall and recorded a career-low 68 at the Wolfpack Spring Open last time out.
