Jonathan Brightwell Named SoCon Player Of The Week Once Again
GREESNBORO, N.C. – For the second straight week, UNCG freshman men’s golfer Jonathan Brightwell (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) has been named the Southern Conference Golfer of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday. Brightwell joins Andrew Novak of Wofford and Wes Gosselin of Chattanooga as the only multiple weekly award winners this season in the SoCon.
Brightwell posted a career-best finish, placing seventh overall with a 4-under par 209 score at the Wolfpack Spring Open. He tied the UNCG single-round scoring mark in round two with an 8-under par 63 on the par-71 course. He was impressive as ever in the second round, posting eight birdies and 10 par scores. His 63 ties the school-record mark held by Roy Dixon, Carter Jenkins and Kyle Sonday. Brightwell birdied holes No. 15, 18, 1, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 11. He birdied seven of his final 13 holes of the round to reach the mark, including a birdie on his second-to-last hole.
Brightwell opened the event with a 4-under par 67 as he posted five birdies, one bogey and 12 par scores. He birdied holes No. 13, 15, 1, 11 and 12 – the final two his last two holes of the round. He has posted rounds of 72 or better in eight out of his last nine rounds, posting three straight top-20 finishes to close out the regular season.
Brightwell ranks 10th overall and leads all SoCon Freshmen with a 72.96 stroke average this season and is the highest ranked freshman in the league. Brightwell and the Spartans head to Pinehurst No. 9 for the 2017 SoCon Championships, beginning Sunday and running through Tuesday.
