Menís Golf Signs Justin Emmons And Nick Lyerly
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG men’s golf head coach Terrance Stewart announced the signings of North Carolina junior golf standouts Justin Emmons (Climax, N.C./Providence Grove) and Nick Lyerly (Salisbury, N.C./East Rowan) to national letters of intent Wednesday. Emmons and Lyerly will join the Spartans for the 2017-18 season next fall.
“Our class is truly the definition of student-athletes, with Justin carrying a 4.6 GPA and Nick a 4.9 GPA,” Stewart said. “They are good friends and will make great teammates. Nick and Justin will represent the program with class and will help continue our path towards championships”
Emmons is a three-year letterwinner at Providence Grove High School for coach Mike Brown. He is a three-time All-State selection and a three-time Pac-6 Player of the Year recipient. He won the 2016 NCHSAA Men’s 2A State championship with scores of 77-68 for a 145 in the 36-hole event.
Emmons won the 2016 Big I State Championships at Mid-Pines with a 4-under par 140, posting rounds of 69-71. He advanced to the Big I National Championships in Sacramento, Calif., placing 37th overall with a 145 (77-68). He placed second at the Pinewild Junior Shootout with a 1-under par 71 and third at the CCNC Junior Masters with a 148 (72-76). He combined with Lyerly this summer to finish second overall at the North Carolina Four Ball Championship at Mill Creek with a 23-under par 193. The Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) currently ranks him the No. 18 junior boys golfer in North Carolina with a 74.48 stroke average this year.
“Justin has had a very good results with a win in the 2016 2A NC High School State Championship and the 2016 Big I at Mid Pines,” Stewart said.”
Lyerly is the No. 1 ranked junior golfer in the state of North Carolina by the CGA, holding a 71.22 stroke average this year. He has posted 15 top-10 finishes in the 2016 calendar year alone, including 13 top-5 finishes and four individual victories. He won the USGA US Junior Amateur Qualifying this summer with a 2-under par 142 (68-74). He advanced to the USGA US Junior National Amateur and finished tied for ninth in the prestigious field with a 2-over par 146 (74-72).
Lyerly is a four-year letterwinner at East Rowan High School for coach Rhett Teems. He is a two-time Rowan County Player of the Year and a three-time All-South Piedmont Conference selection. He won the 2015 3A State championship while helping East Rowan to a runner-up team finish. Helped his team to back-to-back team championships in the South Piedmont Conference.
Lyerly also posted wins at the CGA North Carolina Men’s Amateur this summer with an 8-under par 280 score, posting rounds of 70-71-68-71. He won the North State High School Challenge with a 6-under par 138 (66-72) and the Rowan Junior Open with a 7-under par 137 (71-66). He finished second overall at the North & South Junior at Pinehurst with a 2-under par 214 (74-71-69) and second at the Tar Heel State Junior Championship with a 2-over par 146 (74-72).
“Nick has become the No. 1 ranked player in North Carolina and No. 23 in country from very hard work,” Stewart said. “Nick has had so many top-5 finishes, its impossible to start talking about all of them, but his win in the 2016 Men's North Carolina Amateur was truly history making.”
