CHARLOTTE, N.C. – UNCG softball opened its fall season with a 13-7 win over Charlotte Friday evening. The two teams played a scheduled 10-inning game.

Jasmine Palmer led off the game with a homer to left field to give the Spartans a lead they’d never relinquish. Samantha Lagrama added another run with a double off the wall to left that scored Monica Pepe from second base, who reached earlier on a hit by pitch.

UNCG scored four runs in the third inning. After the bases were loaded on a Marisa Sholtes’ hit by pitch, walk by Jordan Gontram and bunt single by Melanie Darges, Sholtes scored on a fielder's choice up the middle by Stephanie Bryden. Gontram scored on a sac fly to left by Pepe. Rachel Johnson drove in the last run of the inning by knocking in Bryden from second with a double off the wall in left center.

Palmer led off the next inning with a single to right and was brought home by a single in right center by Gontram.

Katie Stettler hit a two-out single in the fifth inning and scored on a double to right center from Palmer.

In the eighth inning three runs were added by UNCG. After a leadoff walk from Palmer, Makenna Matthijs followed with a double to left. Palmer was brought home on a line drive single up the middle by Sholtes. Gabi Howard reached on an RBI-fielder's choice and was driven in by a double to right field by Bryden.

The final two runs came in the last inning. After consecutive walks by Gontram and Howard, Gontram was driven in by a Lagrama single to left field. Stettler knocked in Howard from third base on a deep sac fly to left field.

Bryden started the game in the circle and pitched 3 shutout innings allowing no hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Kylie Bouplon entered the game in the fourth inning and threw two complete innings, giving up six runs, five hits, one walk with two strikeouts.

Hannah Stiltner threw the last four innings and allowed one run, two hits and one walk.

Palmer had a team-high three hits along with two walks. Gontram added 3 walks and a hit, Lagrama had a double and a single, and Matthijs, Bryden and Johnson each added doubles.

UNCG will play the rest of its fall schedule at home, beginning with Elon Sunday at noon.
