GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG softball team received its 2017 Southern Conference Regular Season Championship Rings during halftime of the women’s basketball home game against Greensboro College on Sunday afternoon at Fleming Gymnasium. The players on last year’s squad, including the four graduating seniors, the four coaches and several support staff members were given their rings in the ceremony by softball alums Adriane Starnes and Brittany Ausley.
The Spartans won their first SoCon Regular Season title after winning 29 games and going 11-6 in the league, clinching it at home after defeating ETSU 7-2 on the last game of the regular season. The championship was the first for UNCG since joining the SoCon in 1998 and the first conference regular season title since winning the Big South in 1996. UNCG placed five selections on the first and second teams for the second-straight year, tying Mercer for most in the league.
Starnes was a four-year letter winner from 2004-2007, NFCA Scholar-Athlete in 2006-07 and All-Southern Conference Second Team member in 2007. Starnes ranks in program history second in at-bats (768) and games started (246) and tied for ninth in triples (nine). She now works as a Physical Education teacher and is the head varsity softball coach for Charlotte Country Day.
Ausley was another four-year letterwinner, playing from 2007-2010. She ranks all-time in school history fourth in at-bats (736), fifth in doubles (42), sixth in walks (83), tied for sixth in runs (111) and tied for eighth in games started (236). Currently she’s a State Law Enforcement Agent for the North Carolina License and Theft Bureau.
