GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG softball has added Monica Pepe to its 2018 recruiting class, head coach Janelle Breneman announced on Wednesday. Pepe joins the five players that signed in the fall: Delaney Cumbie, Kamryn Graves, Gabi Howard, Hannah Kincer and Samantha Lagrama.
Pepe is an infielder from Hickory, North Carolina and currently attends Louisburg College (N.C.). Under head coach Eric Lee, she has batted .480 this season with two home runs, 17 RBIs and 27 runs in 23 games played. She ranks 42nd in the National Junior College Athletic Association in on-base percentage (.567) and 60th in stolen bases (18) and was one of 15 players to be named a preseason All-American. She has reached base in every game and opened the season on a 10-game hitting streak. On Wednesday she was named the Outstanding Female Student Athlete of the Year at Louisburg College. At Saint Stephens High School she was a four-time all-conference, all-district and all-state selection.
Pepe played club ball at shortstop with the Carolina Elite under head coach Tony Genovese for two years. She will leave Louisburg will an Associate’s Degree in Science.
The Spartans will head out of the state of North Carolina for the first time since March 4 to face ETSU in a Southern Conference weekend series starting on Saturday at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader.
