SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG softball’s Stephanie Bryden (Orlando, Fla./East River) was named Southern Conference Pitcher of the Week, the leagued announced Monday afternoon. Bryden threw her second complete game of the season in a 4-1 win (eight innings) at Elon that clinched the series for the Spartans against the in-state rivals.
Improving to 6-1 on the year in the victory, Bryden allowed only one run, two hits and no walks with a season-high 12 strikeouts in just 81 pitches. She had a perfect game broken up in the seventh inning with no outs.
Bryden has been one of the top pitchers in the SoCon this year. She leads the league in lowest opposing batting average (.140), least amount of hits allowed (21) and lowest runs allowed (11) and ranks second in ERA (1.76), strikeouts (59) and least amount of home runs allowed (two) and fourth in wins (six), least amount of walks (11) and strikeouts looking (13).
The Spartans have now garnered three conference weekly awards this season. Marisa Sholtes (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie Central) earned the first player of the week selection of the year, and Makenna Matthijs (Greenville, N.C./D.H. Conley) got the honor the following week.
UNCG will take on nearby North Carolina A&T at home on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
