Early Hole Buries Softball in 5-2 Loss to Samford
GREENSBORO, N.C. – After hanging 18 runs on Samford on Friday, UNCG was unable to complete the sweep of the Bulldogs Saturday, falling by a 5-2 score at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
Alicia Bazonski (Sheffield, Mass./Mount Everett) took the loss in the circle, going 2.1 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits. Stephanie Bryden (Orlando, Fla./East River) was once again effective in relief, completing 3.2 innings and surrendering a single run on six hits. Kylie Bouplon (Winston-Salem, N.C./Forsyth Country Day) got all three outs of the seventh, allowing a single hit and no runs.
The Spartans dug themselves an early hole, surrendering three runs in the first inning. With the bases full, Bazonski threw a ball in the dirt for a wild pitch for the first run and Rebecca Kale’s (Hudson, N.C./South Caldwell) return throw went awry, allowing another run to come home. Kathryn Jackson plated the final run of the frame with a sharply hit single through the left side.
UNCG came back with a pair of runs in the bottom half to cut the Bulldog lead to one. Jasmine Palmer (Lake Biltmore, N.C./Florida State) and Alexis Overdiep (Apex, N.C./Apex) each reached with a walk and hit-by-pitch and Gabrielle Cubbage (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) advanced both with a sacrifice bunt. Marisa Sholtes (Albany, N.Y./South Colonie Central) kept her hot bat going with an two-RBI single to center field.
Samford added to its lead in the second inning as Shelby Maze laced a single between Palmer and Sholtes, bringing home Madison Couch. The Bulldogs again threatened in the third but Bryden came in from the bullpen to halt the Bulldog momentum.
From there both teams traded zeroes until the seventh, when Samford added an insurance run on a Kathryn Jackson single. The damage could have been much worse if not for some magic from Bouplon, who came on in relief of Bryden and left the bases loaded.
UNCG gave itself a chance in the bottom half as the first two runners reached. However, the budding momentum was halted when Palmer’s liner to center resulted in Kale being doubled off at second base. The Spartans again brought the tying run to the plate after pinch-hitter Kayleigh Willis (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) was the ninth total batter of the game to be hit by a pitch but Cubbage followed with a fly out to center for the third out.
The Blue and Gold return to action on Wednesday with a non-conference bout, making a short trip to visit Elon for a 5:00 p.m. ball game.
