Wrestling wins UNITY for second straight season
GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the second time in as many years, UNCG's wrestling team won the athletic department's UNITY Award, given annually to the team with the best attendance at other Spartan teams' sporting events.
Created prior to the 2009-10 academic year, the UNITY initiative was designed to encourage members of UNCG's 18 varsity teams to attend each other's contests.
Throughout the school year, several home contests and special events, like FOX8 Gifts for Kids and Relay for Life, were designated as UNITY events. The wrestling team collected 36 of a possible 49 points at those events to edge second-place softball, which earned 34 points as a team. The softball team was runner-up to wrestling last season, as well.
The wrestling team needed to have at least 14 members, or 40 percent of the squad, at each UNITY event to pick up the point. Each team started with an equal amount of earned points for its own home contests.
The women's soccer and women's basketball teams tied for third place in the UNITY standings with 26 points each.
