BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After surrendering an early lead to the hosting Samford Bulldogs, UNCG women's soccer was unable to mount a comeback in a 2-0 loss on the road. The match is just the second loss of the Spartans' current Southern Conference season, with three regular season contests remaining on the schedule in 2019.
The home side struck early, tucking away their first goal of the night on the second shot of the evening from a headed cross in the sixth minute. UNCG striker Cienna Rideout came within inches of leveling things at a goal apiece no more than three minutes later, sending her low driven shot across the face of goal off the left post.
Substitute Nicole Souply would have an opportunity of her own during the waning minutes of the first half, with Rideout volleying a cross inside the 18 that was sent just high of the opposing crossbar by the head of Souply.
Taking a 1-0 deficit into the break, the Spartans would collect just a single shot at goal during the latter 45, with freshman goalkeeper Abby Buchholz tallying four saves in the half. The hosting Bulldogs would double their lead in the 75th minute on a set piece opportunity just outside the 18-yard box, as the Friday evening final read 2-0 in favor of the home team.
