Women's Soccer Opens Three-Game Home Stretch Sunday Versus VMI
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s soccer team begins a regular season ending three-game home stretch Sunday afternoon as the Spartans welcome in VMI in Southern Conference action. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The game will be streamed on the SoCon Digital Network with Drew Casey on the call.
Sunday’s game begins the three-game home stand for the Spartans as they host Mercer and The Citadel next weekend. UNCG enters the weekend in fifth place in the SoCon standings with eight total points as the Spartans own a 5-7-3 overall record and a 2-2-2 mark in Southern Conference play. The Spartans have gone 0-1-2 over their last three games, tying Western Carolina and Chattanooga while falling at Samford. The Spartans have scored 13 goals in 15 games while opponents have scored 22 goals against.
Seven different Spartans have scored this season with junior defender Emily Jensen (Nelson, New Zealand/Santa Clara) leading the way with three goals and two assists. Freshman Quiqui Hita (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) and senior Regan Lehman (Wilmington, Del./Padua Academy) are second on the team with two goals and an assist. Junior Heida Ragney Vidarsdottir (Akureyri, Iceland/Carson Newman) is fourth on the team with two goals.
Freshman Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper (Charlottesville, Va./Albermarle) has played 1276:47 in goal and owns a 1.20 goals against average. Tyler-Cooper has posted four shutouts and 70 saves.
Sunday's game marks just the fourth meeting all-time between UNCG and VMI. The Spartans lead the series by a 2-1-0 margin, winning goals in 2014 (4-1) and 2015 (3-1). Last season, VMI picked up a 1-0 victory at home in Lexington ... The Spartans out-shot the Keydets 16-8 in the loss but VMI scored the game's lone goal in the 47th minute as Taylor Callahan converted a free kick.
VMI enters the weekend with a 5-9-1 overall record and a 2-3-1 mark in Southern Conference play. The Keydets have gone 2-1-0 over their last three with wins over ETSU and Chattanooga while falling at Samford. VMI has scored 14 goals in 15 games while opponents have scored 24 goals against. Julianne Knoblett leads the team with three goals and an assist while Emma Quirk is second on the team with three goals. Ceci Keppeler has played 1270:21 in goal and owns a 1.63 goals against average. Keppeler has posted three shutouts and 104 saves.
