Women's Soccer Hosts Exhibition Against Campbell to Kick Off 2017 Season
GREENSBORO, N.C. – With the regular season opener just a week away, UNCG women’s soccer will look to knock the rust off and make the final preparations for the new season on Saturday when it hosts Campbell at 7:00 p.m. in an Exhibition at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
The game will be the first competitive competition for the Blue and Gold since the spring season. Last season, the Spartans and Fighting Camels met in an exhibition in Buies Creek, North Carolina, battling to a 1-1 draw.
The Spartans are coming off of a 2016 campaign in which they finished the season with a 7-11-2 record, including 4-4-1 in Southern Conference action.
UNCG was recently picked fourth in the SoCon Preseason Coaches Poll, with junior defender Gabbi Charles (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville) tabbed to the Preseason All-SoCon team. The Spartans also return leading goal scorer Melanie Spensiero (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) and stud goalkeeper Chloe Buehler (Perrysburg, Ohio/Penn State), who enters the season just 57 saves off Kathryn Clewley’s program record.
Campbell concluded 2016 with a 12-8-0 overall mark, going 6-3-0 in Big South action, good for a third-place conference finish. The Fighting Camels will be led by leading scorer Alexa Genas, who ranked second on the team a year ago with 20 points (eight goals, four assists). Natalya Marcove will be back between the posts for CU, having started all 20 games last season, recording a 1.53 goals against average.
