GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 2017-18 athletic year is officially underway at UNCG with the women’s soccer team reporting for the first practice of the season Wednesday morning. Head Coach Michael Coll returns 16 letterwinners from last season’s team and welcomes in nine newcomers for the 2017 season.
The Spartans open the season with an exhibition game at home at the UNCG Soccer Stadium Aug. 12 when they host Campbell at 7 p.m. Admission is free. UNCG begins the regular season on the road Aug. 18 when it travels to national-power Florida State for a 7 p.m. start.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper Chloe Buehler (Perrysburg, Ohio/Penn State) leads the Spartans into the season after earning Second Team All-Southern Conference honors last year. Buehler led the league with six shutouts and 104 saves, while posting a 1.08 goals against average.
The Spartans posted a 7-11-2 overall record and a 4-4-1 mark in SoCon play last year. UNCG returns three players who scored at least three goals. Senior Melanie Spensiero (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) led the way with 11 points last season on the strength of a team-high five goals and one assist. Junior Caylin Prillaman (High Point, N.C./Wesleyan Christian Academy) and sophomore Cienna Rideout (Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado) were tied for second on the team with three goals each.
