GREENSBORO, N.C.- UNC Greensboro’s men’s soccer team will appear in Southern Conference Tournament play this Saturday when the Spartans travel to Spartanburg, S.C., to take on Wofford in a quarterfinals matchup.
Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. and the game will be streamed on the SoCon Digital Network.
The Spartans In 2018
The Spartans finished off the regular season in style this past Saturday, beating 10-win Furman by a 1-0 final on Senior Night. In a game where UNCG produced quality chances throughout the contest, it looked like the contest was en route for overtime, which would have been the Spartans’ eighth appearance in overtime during the regular season.
In the 88th minute, however, sophomore forward Manny Apau put the Spartans ahead for good when he scored his third goal of the season to beat Paladins goalkeeper Ben Hale.
With the goal, UNCG finished the regular season with an overall record of 6-8-2 and a SoCon record of 2-2-2.
The offense during the regular season was led by freshman Jacob Planell, who tallied a team-high four goals. He is one of six UNCG players to record at least two goals so far this season, joined by Alex Henderson, Matt Mattis, Micah Albert, Tyson Hichman and Apau.
This matchup will mark the 32nd meeting all-time between the Spartans and Terriers dating back to UNCG’s first season in the SoCon in 1997. The Spartans hold a 23-7-1 overall advantage. In their regular season meeting this year, Wofford defeated UNCG on a goal scored with less than two minutes left in double overtime.
This will also be the first matchup between the two schools in the SoCon Tournament since Nov. 5, 2011, when UNCG beat Wofford 1-0.
A Look At Wofford
The Terriers enter Saturday evening’s quarterfinals matchup after compiling a regular season of 5-10-1 and a conference record of 3-3-0. While Wofford tallied just one victory – a 1-0 decision against Winthrop on Sept. 2 – in its first 10 games, the Terriers won three of their six SoCon matchups.
Wofford’s offense has been led by Connor Donohue, who has scored a team-high six goals along with four assists.
Shane Berson, meanwhile, has started in net for the Terriers 12 times this year, collecting a record of 3-8-1.
