Men's Soccer Travels To Wofford Tuesday Night
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s soccer team hits the road Tuesday night as the Spartans travel to Spartanburg, S.C., for a rematch against Southern Conference foe Wofford. Game time is set for 7 p.m. and will be streamed live in full HD for free on the SoCon Digital Network with links available at www.uncgspartans.com.
The Spartans head to Wofford looking to exact revenge on the Terriers as UNCG dropped a 2-1 overtime loss to Wofford at home earlier this season. Wofford scored two goals just 11:18 apart to swipe the win away from the Spartans, tying the game in the 81st minute and winning the game in the 93rd minute on a goal by Sam Ross. The loss snapped the Spartans’ five-game unbeaten streak and ended UNCG’s shutout streak at 613:09.
Tuesday’s game marks the 30th meeting all-time between UNCG and Wofford. The Spartans hold a 22-6-1 record against the Terriers, including winning three out of the last five meetings. Last year, the teams split the regular season series with the road team each notching a win. UNCG posted a 2-1 overtime victory over the Terriers in Spartanburg with Matt Mattis (Little Stoke, England) scoring the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute of play. Wofford turned the tables on UNCG in Greensboro, posting a 1-0 victory as Dredon Kelly scored the game’s lone goal in the 72nd minute of action.
The Spartans enter Tuesday’s game with a 6-6-2 overall record and a 3-2-1 mark in SoCon play. UNCG currently sits in third place with 10 total points but trail first-place ETSU by just two points. Only four points separate the top five spots in the SoCon standings with four conference games remaining in the year. ETSU holds the top spot with 12 points, Mercer is second with 11, followed by UNCG (10), Wofford (9) and Furman (8).
UNCG has scored 13 goals in 14 games this season while allowing just 11 goals against. Ten different Spartans have scored goals this season with Mattis leading the way with three goals. Junior midfielder Leeroy Maguraushe (Milton Keynes, England) leads the team with seven points on the strength of two goals and three assists.
Junior goalkeeper Jon Milligan (Mount Pleasant, S.C./Wando) has played every minute in goal for the Spartans at 1323:14. He leads the SoCon with a 0.75 goals against average, eight shutouts and an .800 save percentage. Milligan ranks second in the entire nation with eight shutouts, trailing only Indiana's Trey Muse (10).
Wofford enters Tuesday’s game with a 3-11-0 record overall but a 3-3-0 mark in league play. The Terriers have picked up SoCon wins over UNCG, VMI and Furman but are coming off a 4-1 loss at Mercer Saturday night. Wofford has scored 16 goals in 14 games but has allowed 34 goals against.
Lucas Altman leads the team with three goals and an assist while four players have scored two goals this season in Austin Tuggle, Ben Nickol, Zack Aversano and Ross. Hunter Wages has played a team-high 685:49 in goal and owns a 1.84 goals against average with a .611 save percentage.
