GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s soccer team opens the home portion of the 2017 Southern Conference schedule Saturday night when the Spartans welcome in league rival and No. 21 Furman. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium and admission is FREE! The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 with links available at www.uncgspartans.com.
The Spartans carry a four-game unbeaten streak into Saturday’s contest and have not allowed a goal over a span of 442:65, posting four straight shutouts. UNCG is coming off a scoreless draw at preseason SoCon favorite ETSU Tuesday night and has posted wins over UNC Asheville, Campbell and Appalachian State during the streak.
Junior goalkeeper Jon Milligan (Mount Pleasant, S.C./Wando) has played every minute in goal this season at 854:40. Milligan leads the SoCon with a 0.74 goals against average, five shutouts and an .816 save percentage. He ranks second in the league with 31 saves.
UNCG has scored six goals in nine games while only allowing seven goals against. The Spartans have seen five different players score this season with junior forward Matt Mattis (Little Stoke, England) leading the charge with a pair of goals. Junior midfielder Leeroy Maguraushe (Milton Keynes, England) and freshman midfielder Alex Henderson (Mount Pleasant, S.C./Wando) are tied for second on the team in scoring with a goal and an assist.
Saturday’s game marks the 37th career meeting between UNCG and Furman. The Spartans lead the all-time series by a 17-15-4, including posting a 3-0-0 mark against the Paladins last year. UNCG won three thrilling games against the Paladins last season, beginning with a double overtime win in the first meeting as former Spartan Ricky Chavez scored in the 108th minute.
The Spartans had their biggest comeback of the year in Greenville last season, rallying for three goals in the final 20 minutes to erase a two-goal deficit. UNCG scored two goals in the final four minutes, including the game-winning goal from Tevyn Henry (Franklin, Tenn./Centennial) with 31 seconds remaining. The Spartans closed out the perfect year against Furman in the SoCon Tournament with a 1-0 victory as Eric Gunnarsson (Falkenberg, Sweden) scored in the 74th minute.
Furman enters Saturday’s game ranked No. 21 in the country as it carries a 7-2-0 record on the year and a 1-0-0 mark in league play. The Paladins have picked up wins this season against College of Charleston, Georgia Southern, No. 4 Denver, Air Force, UNC Asheville, Presbyterian and most recently against VMI by a 4-0 score. Furman has scored 20 goals in nine games and held opponents to just nine goals against.
Laurence Wyke leads the Paladins in scoring with 11 points on the strength of four goals and three assists. Wyke has scored all four of his goals from the penalty spot. Connor Hubbard is second on the team in scoring with four goals and two assists while Cole McLagan and Kevin Edelman have each tallied three goals.
Ben Hall has played all but 57:08 in goal for the Paladins and owns a 1.03 goals against average. Hall has three shutouts and has posted 20 saves on the season.
