GREENSBORO, N.C.- UNC Greensboro’s men’s soccer team ended the regular season on a high note, defeating Furman 1-0 on Saturday evening at UNCG Soccer Stadium. With the victory, the Spartans finished the regular season with an overall record of 6-8-2.

It looked like the Spartans were headed to their eighth overtime game on the season, but Manny Apau had other plans when he scored with less than three minutes remaining in the contest.

“All year long the players have kept a positive attitude. We know and we’ve always believed that we have quality on this team and in some aspects we’ve been unlucky and a little bit inconsistent at times, but we know we can play with the very best,” said Head Coach Justin Maullin. “Tonight we showed quite a bit of resilience going down a man and continuing to have one-way traffic for us and it would have been a huge injustice if we lost that game.

“We dug deep with 10 men and I’m very happy for Manny to get the goal and couldn’t be prouder for our group of kids and our seniors to leave their last home game with a win.”

The Spartans created twice as many chances on net than the Paladins in the first half, but UNCG was unable to find the back of the net in a scoreless frame. Despite not putting one in the back of the goal, UNCG had numerous chances to take the lead. Julian Montoya, Leeroy Maguraushe, Alex Henderson and Casey Penland, who hit the crossbar on a header, all nearly scored goals.

In a physical second half, UNCG spent most of the final 45 minutes down a man after Moises Gonzalez received a red card. This, however, did not stop the Spartans from continuing to pepper the Furman goal with shots. Eventually, the gates opened for Apau, who scored with less than three minutes left to give UNCG its second conference victory on the year.

The goal was his third on the season.

The Spartans’ next appearance on the field will come next weekend in the Southern Conference Tournament against Wofford. UNCG will be the No. 5 seed against the No. 4 seeded Terriers. The winner of the game will advance to the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 9 in Johnson City, Tenn. The championship game will take place on Sunday, Nov. 11.

In their only matchup this year, the Spartans fell to the Terriers 2-1 in double overtime on Oct. 9, as Wofford scored the game-winning goal in the final minute of play.
