GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG men’s soccer sophomore defender Casey Penland (High Point, N.C./High Point Christian) has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. This marks the first weekly honor of Penland’s career and is the fourth time this year UNCG has been honored, joining juniors Jon Milligan (Mount Pleasant, S.C./Wando) (twice) and Leeroy Maguraushe (Milton Keynes, England).
Penland led the Spartans to a 2-0-0 record on the week and back into first place in the SoCon standings with a win on the road at Wofford and at home Saturday against Mercer. Penland scored five points on the week from his defensive position, scoring a goal and dishing out an assist in the road win over the Terriers.
Penland scored the game-tying goal against Mercer as the Spartans rallied from an early one-goal deficit on their way to a double overtime victory. Penland also helped the Spartans as a team post a 0.92 goals against average in the two victories.
Penland and the Spartans close out the home portion of the regular season tonight as the Spartans host VMI. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
