Mattis' Goal Leads Men's Soccer To 1-0 Victory At Campbell

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG junior forward Matt Mattis (Little Stoke, England) scored his second goal in as many games to lead the Spartans to a hard fought 1-0 victory on the road over Campbell Wednesday night at the Eakes Soccer Complex. The victory is the second-straight for the Spartans and their first road win of the year heading into their final non-conference match Saturday night at home against Appalachian State at 7 p.m.

The Spartans came out quickly against the Camels as junior defender Josh Masten (Mount Pleasant, S.C./Wando) had a chance just three minutes into the game off a set piece. The Spartans sent a long ball into the box and Masten was able to head it towards goal, but it sailed just wide of the net in the early going.

Campbell (4-3-1) responded to the Spartans’ early chance with one of its own in the 14th minute of action. Leading scorer JJ Donnelly got his head on a long cross and pushed a shot just wide of the post to keep the game scoreless. The teams traded chances back and forth in the first half with Campbell holding a 6-4 edge in shots.

Campbell had a couple of early chances in the second half to take the lead but junior goalkeeper Jon Milligan (Mount Pleasant, S.C./Wando) came up with some big saves. Milligan stood tall in the 50th minute of action as Donnelly found space from 15-yards out, smothering the shot for the Spartans.

UNCG had a big chance in the 53rd minute off a counter attack from a Campbell corner kick. The Spartans got the ball to junior midfielder Leeroy Maguraushe (Milton Keynes, England) on the break and he ran down the middle of the field, forcing the Camel defenders to back-pedal. Maguraushe drove into the 18-yard box before leaving it for sophomore forward Faisal Almubaslat (Greensboro, N.C./Northern Guilford). Almubaslat ripped a bending shot through traffic but it struck the outside of the post to keep the game scoreless.

The Spartans scored the game’s lone goal in the 65th minute of play as freshman Nelson Oceano (Berlin, Germany) was hauled down 40-yards out by a Campbell defender. Maguraushe sent a long ball into the box where Masten flicked it into the box. Mattis brought it down and fired a shot towards goal. A Campbell defender blocked his initial shot but Mattis stuck with it and rammed home the rebound past the out-stretched arms of the Camel goalkeeper Matt Mozynski for the 1-0 lead. The goal was his second of the season and second-straight for the Spartans as he scored the insurance goal in the second half Saturday night in the win over UNC Asheville.

UNCG maintained the lead down the stretch as they held possession for much of the second half. The Spartans weathered a late Campbell push that included numerous corner kicks but the back line and Milligan stood tall for their third shutout of the year and second straight. Milligan finished the night with four saves in the clean sheet.
