Men's Soccer Opens Practice For 2017 Season
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s soccer team opened its 2017 season Tuesday morning as the Spartans held their first preseason practice under the guidance of head coach Justin Maullin. The Spartans open the season with an exhibition game at Elon August 18 before beginning the regular season August 25 at UAB.
The Spartans return 18 letterwinners, including eight starters, from last season’s 11-7-2 team that finished 6-4 in Southern Conference action. UNCG ranked first in the SoCon in scoring last year with 39 goals in 20 games while also handing out 37 assists. The Spartans tallied 20 more points and 60 more shots than any other team in the league last year.
Junior Leeroy Maguraushe (Milton Keynes, England/Stantonbury) leads the way after earning All-Region and All-SoCon honors last year. Maguraushe scored one goal and dished out a team-high six assists last season. Junior Alexander Lewis (Arden, N.C./T.C. Roberson) is the Spartans’ top returning scorer after posting five goals last year. Junior Matteo Busio (Greensboro, N.C./Western Guilford) was tied for the team lead with six assists on the year while adding a goal.
Sophomore defender Casey Penland (High Point, N.C./High Point Christian Academy) and senior defender Eric Gunnarsson (Falkenberg, Sweden) lead the way on the back end helping the Spartans post six shutouts as a team. Penland and Gunnarsson both tallied nine points on the season, scoring four goals and dishing out an assist.
