Men's Soccer Announces 2017 Schedule, Highlighted By Hosting North Carolina

GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG men's soccer head coach Justin Maullin announced an 18-game regular season schedule for the 2017 season that features 10 home games at the UNCG Soccer Stadium, including welcoming in 2016 College Cup participant North Carolina and local rivals High Point, UNC Asheville and Appalachian State.

“We have put together a challenging schedule for the program in 2017,” Maullin said. “We will be put to test early with four very difficult games that will have to bring the best out of us, we will be battle tested for October when another tough Southern Conference slate begins.”

The Spartans starts the season with an exhibition game against former Southern Conference rival Elon Aug. 18. UNCG opens the regular season Aug. 25 when it travels to Birmingham, Ala., to face off against UAB in the second game of a home-and-home series. Last year, the two teams battle to a 2-2 double overtime tie in Greensboro.

The Spartans open the home portion of the schedule Aug. 28 when they welcome in Triad rival High Point in the first of 10 games at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The meeting will be the 30th all-time between UNCG and HPU, marking the first visit by the Panthers to Greensboro since 2013. The Spartans open September with a road game at 2016 NCAA Tournament second round participant Coastal Carolina (Sept. 1).

UNCG returns home for one of the biggest home games in recent history when it welcomes in North Carolina from the Atlantic Coast Conference Sept. 4 on Labor Day night. The Tar Heels are coming off a 14-3-4 record and advanced to the 2016 College Cup before falling 10-9 on penalty kicks in the national semifinals to Stanford. It marks the first meeting between UNCG and The Tar heels since 2005.

The Spartans continued their three-game home stretch hosting Presbyterian Sept. 9 and UNC Asheville Sept. 16. UNCG plays its final non-conference road game Sept. 20 when it travels to Buies Creek to face off against Campbell. The Spartans closed out non-league play Sept. 23 when they welcome in former SoCon rival Appalachian State for the first meeting between the two teams since 2013.

The 2017 Southern Conference schedule will feature a 10-game slate that sees the Spartans play a home-and-home series against the other five members of the league in VMI, Furman, Mercer, ETSU and Wofford. The Spartans open the conference season Sept. 23 when they travel to defending league champion and NCAA Tournament team East Tennessee State.

UNCG hosts conference rival Furman in its first league home game Sept. 30. The Spartans will then host Wofford (Oct. 3) before travelling to Mercer (Oct. 7) and VMI (Oct. 10). UNCG welcomes in ETSU (Oct. 14) and travels to Wofford (Oct. 17) before hosting Mercer in the Homecoming game Oct. 21. The Spartans wrap up the regular season hosting VMI (Oct. 24) before travelling to rival Furman Oct. 28.

The 2017 Southern Conference Tournament begins Nov. 4. The top two seeds in the standings will receive byes to the semifinals while the third and fourth seeds will host a pair of quarterfinals games on campus. The 2017 SoCon Tournament will be played in Greenville, S.C., on the campus of Furman with the semifinals set for Nov. 10 and the finals Nov. 12.
