GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG men’s soccer team placed three players on the All-Southern Conference postseason teams chosen by the league’s head coaches and had one member on the conference’s All-Freshman team, the league office announced Tuesday morning.

Senior forward Damieon Thomas (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Georgia Military Institute) and sophomore midfielder Leeroy Maguraushe (Milton Keynes, England/Stantonbury) were named to the First Team All-SoCon while junior defender Eric Gunnarsson (Falkenberg, Sweden) earned Second Team All-SoCon accolades. Additionally, freshman defender Casey Penland (High Point, N.C./High Point Christian) was named to the league’s All-Freshman Team.

Thomas was named to the First Team All-SoCon after earning Second Team accolades last year as a junior. He led the league in scoring this year with 23 total points, ranking 32nd in the country during the regular season. He finished third in the league with eight goals and second in the league with seven assists, the only player in the league ranked in the top five in each category.

Maguraushe earns his second-straight First Team All-SoCon honor in his first two years in the league. He finished fourth on the team in scoring at eight total points, scoring one goal and dishing out six assists. He ranked second in the league with his six helpers, while also ranking fifth overall with 41 total shots.

Gunnarsson picks up his first-ever All-SoCon postseason honor, earning Second Team accolades this year. He spearheaded the Spartans’ defense that posted six shutouts on the year. Additionally, he scored three goals and dished out an assist. He tallied two game-winning goals this year – one in double overtime against Campbell and one Saturday night against Furman advancing the Spartans to the SoCon Tournament semifinals.

Penland was named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team and was one of the top candidates for Freshman of the Year. He led all league freshmen in scoring with nine points, scoring four goals and handing out an assist from his defensive position. He scored three of his goals in league play, including the game-tying goal in the Spartans’ three-goal comeback at Furman.

Will Bagrou of Mercer was named the league’s Player of the Year after finishing tied for second in the league in scoring with 20 points. Jonny Sutherland of ETSU was named the Goalkeeper of the Year after leading the league with a 0.92 goals against average and eight shutouts. The Buccaneers also took home Coach of the Year honors for Bo Oshoniyi and Freshman of the Year accolades for Joe Pickering after winning the regular season title.

The Spartans continue play Thursday afternoon in the SoCon Tournament semifinals as the fourth-seeded Spartans host top-seeded ETSU. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
