GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team continued its strong start to the season, finishing ninth overall at the Ptarmigan Ram Classic hosted by Colorado State. The Spartans return to action Oct. 2-3 as they host their annual fall tournament the Starmount Forest Fall Classic.

Sophomore Louisa Tichy (Germering, Germany) led the way with a career-best 13th place finish in the 54-hole event. Tichy posted a 3-over par 219 score on the three-day stage, recording rounds of 73-71-75. Her 219 score was a career-low for 54-holes. She closed out the week with a 3-over par round three, posting four birdies, seven bogeys and seven par scores. She finished fifth in the entire field in par-4 scoring at 1-over par.

The Spartans as a team finished ninth overall in the field with a 25-over par 889 (293-295-301). New Mexico State won the overall team title with an 8-under par 856 (294-284-278), beating San Jose State by two strokes 6-under par 858. Suthavee Chanachai of NMSU won the individual title with an 11-under par 205 (70-63-72), winning by three strokes.

Sophomore Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) turned in a 26th place finish at 6-over par 222. Her 222 score set a new career-low, surpassing her previous record of 228 at the William & Mary Invitational last fall. She finished her day with 11 par scores and birdied hole No. 3. She ranked 10th in the field overall with 35 par scores in 54-holes.

Freshman Keri Kenkel (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) posted her best round of the week Tuesday with a 1-over par 73 to move up to 49th place overall. Kenkel finished at 11-over par 227 after rounds of 74-80-73. She recorded three birdies, four bogeys and 11 pars in round three, carding her second-lowest career round. She also finished 10th in the field with 35 par on the week.

“I am really glad our team could pull out a top-10 finish against a tough field,” Kenkel said. “I played really well today and I am glad I could leave the tournament on a good note. I hit the ball really well and made some clutch shots to keep the round exciting. Our team is super excited for our upcoming home tournament at Starmount Forest and we hope to see all of our fans out there supporting us.”

Freshman Tara Bettle (Hohen Neuendorf, Germany) finished in 49th place as well with an 11-over par 227. Bettle opened the event with back-to-back rounds of 2-over par 74 before notching a 7-over par 79 in round three. She posted 10 par scores and birdies two holes back-to-back at No. 15-16.

Junior Natalia Asensio (Madrid, Spain/Cardenal Spinola) was the third Spartan to finish in a tie for 49th overall at 11-over par 227. Asensio opened with a 1-over par 73 in round one and a 7-over par 79 in round two, but rebounded with a 3-over par 75 in the final round. She posted 15 pars Tuesday and finished ninth in the field with 36 par scores in 54 holes.

“I am proud of how I was able to fight the round after a tough start,” Asensio said. “We have some work to do as a team before our next tournament, but we are so excited to host the Starmount Forest Fall Classic in less than two weeks.”

Freshman Sara Rydman (Taby, Sweden) played as an individual for the second-straight tournament and finished tied for 49th at 11-over par 227. Rydman posted rounds of 73-80-74, ending the week with three birdies, five bogeys and 10 par scores in round three.

Joining the Spartans in the 15-team field includes host Colorado State, Boise State, Northern Arizona, UC Irvine, New Mexico State, Gonzaga, Indiana, Long Beach State, Nevada, Northern Colorado, Portland State, San Francisco, San Jose State and Wyoming.
