GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team opens the 2017-18 season Monday as the Spartans take part in the Jim West Challenge hosted by Texas State. The two-day, 54-hole event will be play on the par-72, 6,137-yard Fazio Course at The Club at Carlton Woods. The event begins with 36-holes Monday with a 9:30 a.m. (ET) shotgun start with the third and final round Tuesday, also with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start. Live scoring will be available via www.golfstatresults.com.

The field at the Jim West Challenge features 12 top-100 teams, including seven ranked in the top 50 at the end of last season. Joining the Spartans in the field includes host Texas State, Augusta (42), Duke (10), Kent State (14), Missouri, UNCG, Notre Dame, Oklahoma (25), Southern Miss , Texas A&M (24), TCU (40), UTSA , Texas Tech (35) and Tulsa.

Sophomore Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) leads the Spartans in the top spot in the lineup. Dobbins posted a 79.0 stroke average in 29 rounds last year, highlighted by two 14th place finishes at the William & Mary Invitational and the Starmount Forest Fall Classic.

Junior Natalia Asensio (Madrid, Spain/Cardenal Spinola) is second in the lineup after finishing with a 78.45 stroke average in 29 rounds. Asensio is coming off her best career finish at the 2017 Southern Conference Championships where she placed ninth overall. Sophomore Louisa Tichy (Germering, Germany) rounds out the returners in the lineup in the No. 3 spot. Tichy posted a 78.75 stroke average last year and placed 15th at the SoCon Championships, her top finish as well.

This week marks the first-ever collegiate events for three Spartan freshmen in Keri Kenkel (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic), Tara Bettle (Hohen Neuendorf, Germany) and Sara Rydman (Taby, Sweden). Kenkel and Bettle round out the Spartans’ lineup while Rydman will play as an individual.
