GREENSBORO, N.C.- Hosting the annual Starmount Fall Classic at Starmount Forest Country Club, UNC Greensboro’s women’s golf team (305-292-304) finished in second place during the two-day tournament behind only Tennessee.
“I’m really proud of the team for being able to hang in and finish second this week,” said Head Coach Janell Howland. “The golf course played tough and it showed some areas that we need to get better at before we go to Pinehurst next week. I’m excited for the momentum that a second play finish will give us and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season to see what these ladies can do.”
The Spartans were led by Tara Bettle, who ended the tournament with a one-over par 217 after shooting a three-over par 75 in the final round to finish the tournament in second place, while senior Lexi Kershaw finished tied for 14th with a seven-over par 223 after shooting a one-over par 73 in the final round.
“Tara played really solid golf this week,” Howland said. “Tee-to-green she did a lot of really good things. I’m proud of her for hanging in there even when she got nervous in the end, but second place is awesome and I’m excited to see what’s next from her.”
Sophomore Keri Kenkel finished 32nd with a three-round score of 232 after shooting a four-over par 76 in the final round, while freshman Hailey Joy placed tied for 37th with a score of 234 and junior Louisa Tichy collected a 42nd place finish with a score of 235.
In individual play, sophomore Sara Rydman recorded the best final round score of four-under par 68 to finish in a tie for fourth place with a three-round score of three-over par 219, while senior Natalia Asensio finished tied for 21st with a score of 228 and junior Kendal Dobbins finished tied for 58th with a score of 241.
Tennessee won both the individual and the team championships. The Volunteers shot two-over par 866 to finish ahead of the Spartans, while Malia Stovall won the individual with a score of five-under par 211.
