GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team closed out the fall season with a 12th place finish at the Palmetto Intercollegiate hosted by the College of Charleston at the Kiawah Island Resort Turtle Point Course Tuesday.
The Spartans posted their lowest team score of the event in the final round, carding a 298 Tuesday to finish 51-over par 915 (311-306-298) to finish in front of five teams, including Southern Conference foe ETSU. Ole Miss won the event at 19-over par 883 (290-301-292), winning by eight strokes over Kennesaw State. Diane Lim of Ole Miss was the individual winner at 3-under par 213 (68-74-71) as only two players for the entire tournament finished better than 1-over par.
Sophomore Louisa Tichy (Germering, Germany) was the Spartans’ top finisher, moving up 12 spots in the standings to finish 18th overall, marking her third top-20 finish of the fall. Tichy posted a 9-over par 225 as she opened with a 79 in round one before improving each day with a 2-over par 74 in round two and an even-par 72 in round three. She posted three birdies, three bogeys and 12 par scores Tuesday. Tichy finished the 54-hole event third in the field in par-5 scoring at 4-under par.
“I hit a lot of greens today and saved my score with solid short game play when I missed greens,” Tichy said. “I had trouble making a lot of birdie putts, but ended up with an even-par score. Overall, we ended our successful fall season with a good last round as a team.”
Freshman Tara Bettle (Hohen Neuendorf, Germany) moved up to 42nd place with a 14-over par 230 score. Bettle opened with a 78 and 79 in her first two rounds before carding a 1-over par 73 in round three. She posted two birdies, three bogeys and 13 par scores Tuesday.
“Today, I finally felt comfortable with my irons again and could hit more greens than in the last two days combined,” Bettle said. “Only a few bogeys and two birdies helped me to finish the fall season with a solid 73. I cannot wait for spring to compete again with this amazing team.”
Junior Natalia Asensio (Madrid, Spain/Cardenal Spinola) posted a 15-over par 231 score to finish in a tie for 48th place overall. Asensio improved on each of her rounds, opening with a 79 in round one, a 77 in round two and a 3-over par 75 in round three. She recorded three birdies and 11 par scores in the final round.
Freshman Keri Kenkel (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) placed 56th overall at 17-over par 233 with rounds of 79-76-78. Kenkel recorded three birdies and seven pars in round three. Sophomore Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) closed out the lineup with a 21-over par 237 (75-82-80) to finish in 70th place.
The Palmetto Intercollegiate consisted of 18 team including UNCG, Boston University, Campbell, Charleston Southern, Chattanooga, College of Charleston, Daytona State, East Tennessee State, Kansas, Kennesaw State, Marshall, Mercer, Mississippi, North Florida, Old Dominion, Troy, Tulsa and Xavier.
