Tichy Leads Women's Golf In Day One Of Pinehurst Challenge
GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG sophomore women’s golfer Louisa Tichy (Germering, Germany) sits in 20th place overall to lead the Spartans after the first two rounds of the Pinehurst Challenge hosted by the College of Charleston at Pinehurst No. 1 Monday. The Spartans will play the third and final round Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start from holes No. 8-10. Live scoring for the event will be held at www.golfstatresults.com.
Tichy sits in a tie for 20th place overall rising up 23 spots in the standings in the second round. She carded an even-par 144 in the two rounds Monday, opening with a 2-over par 74 in round one before notching a 2-under par 70 in round two. She battled back in round one from a quadruple-bogey on her third hole to pull back to 2-over par with four birdies the rest of the way.
Tichy kept the momentum going in round two with five birdies, three bogeys and 10 par scores. She finished the first 36-holes tie for first overall in par-3 scoring at 2-under par and was third in the entire field with nine birdies in the first two rounds.
"I had a rough start into the 36-holes today but I kept it together and finished strong," Tichy said. "I made a lot of birdies and dropped a lot of putts. We also had a really good team result and I can't wait to see how strong we finish in the last round tomorrow."
Her play helped the Spartans finish in 12th place overall in the team standings in the 19-team field. UNCG recorded an 11-over par 587 on the day with rounds of 297 and 290. The Spartans’ second-round score of 2-over par 288 is the lowest round to par this season. East Carolina holds the overall lead at 10-under par 566 (289-277) while Coastal Carolina is second at 9-under par 567 (285-282). Malene Krolboll Hansen of ECU holds the individual lead at 9-under par 135 (68-67).
Freshman Tara Bettle (Hohen Neuendorf, Germany) also rebounded in the second round Monday to move up 30 spots into 48th place overall with a 4-over par 148. Bettle opened with a 6-over par 78 in round one before turning in a 2-under par 70 in round two. She tallied five birdies, three bogeys and 10 par scores in round two, including a stretch of three birdies in five holes on No. 2-6. She finished sixth in the field with eight total birdies in the first 36-holes.
"After a tough morning round, I finally got back into my game for the second 18-holes and five birdies in the round helped me shoot 70," Bettle said. "I am really proud of how the team delivered, especially in the second round. I am exctied for round three tomorrow."
Freshman Keri Kenkel (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) is also tied for 48th overall at 4-over par 148. Kenkel opened with a 1-over par 73 in round one with three birdies, four bogeys and 11 par scores. She followed that up with a 3-over par 75 in round two with one birdie, four bogeys and 13 pars. She finished day one fourth in par-3 scoring at 1-under par.
Sophomore Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) sits in a tie for 61st overall at 6-over par 150. Dobbins posted back-to-back rounds of 3-over par 75 on the day, including 12 pars in her second round.
Junior Natalia Asensio (Madrid, Spain/Cardenal Spinola) rounded out the lineup in a tie for 65th place overall at 7-over par 151. Asensio posted rounds of 75-76 on the day, carding six total birdies. Freshman Sara Rydman (Taby, Sweden) played as an individual and posted an 8-over par 152 (74-78) to finish in 72nd place.
The Pinehurst Challenge consists of 19 teams including the Spartans, College of Charleston, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Elon, Georgia State, Jacksonville, Jacksonville State, James Madison, Maryland, Nebraska, North Florida, Old Dominion, Presbyterian, Samford, Towson, UAB and William & Mary.
