Women's Golf Finishes Fifth At SoCon Championships, Best Finish Since 2013
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's golf team posted its best finish since 2013 at the Southern Conference Championships as the Spartans moved up to fifth place overall in the field Tuesday in the rain-shortened event at The Country Club of Lexington in South Carolina. The Spartans placed two in the top 15 of the field, including a career-best performance from sophomore women's golfer Natalia Asensio (Madrid, Spain/Cardenal Spinola).
“I am excited to finish the season fifth in the conference,” head coach Janell Howland said. “Natalia had a solid tournament and we were happy she secured her first career top-10. I am excited to have time for the team to heal and recover. It has been a difficult semester with the team due to injuries, but we always battle it out. I am proud of their growth this year and I am so excited about the future of this program.”
Asensio set a new-career mark by placing ninth overall in the field with a 5-over par 149 score in the 36-hole event. She opened the event with a season-best 2-over par 74 Sunday before posting a 3-over par 75 in round two Tuesday. She posted 13 pars, four bogeys and birdied hole No. 3 in the final round. She finished fifth overall in the field with 25 par scores in the 36-holes and was fifth in the field in par-4 scoring at even-par. Her ninth place finish is the highest for a Spartan since Sammie Buchanan's ninth-place showing in 2015.
“I am very happy with the way I was able to finish the season,” Asensio said. “I am proud of the team for moving up a in the field. It is a great way to end the season and is promising for the future of this program.”
The Spartans as a team finished in fifth place overall, marking their best finish since 2013 when UNCG place third overall. The Spartans finished 42-over par 618 in the two-round event, posting a 306 Sunday and a 312 Tuesday. Ninth-ranked Furman won the event by 28-strokes with an 8-under par 568 (280-288). Natalie Srinivasan of Furman won the individual title with a 5-under par 139 (69-70).
Freshman Louisa Tichy (Germering, Germany/Max-Born Gymnasium) posted her second-best finish of the year, placing 15th overall with an 11-over par 155. Tichy opened with a 3-over par 75 in round one before posting an 8-over par 80 in round two. She finished with 11 pars, six bogeys and a double bogey Tuesday. She was 12th in the field overall with 24 par scores in 36 holes.
Junior Lexi Kershaw (Winston-Salem, N.C./Catawba) was third on the team in a tie for 23rd place overall with a 12-over par 156. Kershaw posted back-to-back rounds of 6-over par 78, including nine pars in round two while posting birdies on holes No. 8 and 10.
Senior Kristin Powers (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) rounded out her UNCG career with her fourth career appearance at the SoCon Championships. Powers finished tied for 32nd place with a 16-over par 160, posting rounds of 81-79. Freshman Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) closed out the lineup in 37th place with a 19-over par 163 (79-84) in her first career championship appearance.
