GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG sophomore women's golfer Natalia Asensio (Madrid, Spain/Cardenal Spinola) sits in sixth place overall and the Spartans are in the middle of the pack in fifth place after round one of the 2017 Southern Conference Championships hosted at the Country Club of Lexington in South Carolina. The Spartans will play round two Monday with tee times from hole No. 1 from 10:00-10:40 a.m. Live scoring will be available via Birdie Fire with links at www.uncgspartans.com.

Asensio tied her season-low with a 2-over par 74 to sit in sixth place overall in the individual standings. She posted 12 par scores, four bogeys and birdied holes No. 3 and 16 on the day. She enters round two just five strokes out of the lead as only four players were under par.

“I was very confident with my putting today,” Asensio said. “I hit some good shots and gave myself some good chances for birdies in the round.”

The Spartans as a team are in fifth place overall with an 18-over par 306 score. The 306 score is tied for the sixth-lowest round of the season for UNCG. Furman, which entered the tournament ranked No. 10 in the country, leads the field by 20 strokes after posting an 8-under par 280 score. The Paladins had four of the top five finishers in round one, including all four scoring players carding an even-par or better. Chattanooga is second in the field at 12-over par 300. There is a three-way tie atop the individual leaderboard at 3-under par between two players from Furman and one from ETSU.

Freshman Louisa Tichy (Germering, Germany/Max-Born Gymnasium) was second on the team and is tied for 10th overall with a 3-over par 75. Tichy's 75 score is just one shot off her career-best as she posted 13 birdies, four bogeys and birdied hole No. 14.

“We had a good start to the tournament as a team,” Tichy said. “I played solid golf today, but had some struggles with my putting. I am excited to see what the course has in store for us the next two days.”

Junior Lexi Kershaw (Winston-Salem, N.C./Catawba) sits in a tie for 24th place overall with a 6-over par 78. Kershaw posted 11 pars on the day and was tied for second overall in the field in par-5 scoring at even-par.

Freshman Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) posted a 28th place showing after round one with a 7-over par 79. Dobbins posted 12 pars on the day and finished her round with six consecutive pars. Senior Kristin Powers (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) rounded out the lineup with a 9-over par 81 to sit in a tie for 35th place in her fourth career SoCon Championship.
