Women’s Golf Moves Up To 14th At Palmetto Intercollegiate
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s golf team sits in 14th place after the first two rounds of Palmetto Intercollegiate hosted by the College of Charleston at the Kiawah Island Report Turtle Point Golf Course. Round three of the tournament will be played Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstatresults.com.
The Spartans recorded a 21-over par 309 score Monday and sit 45-over par 621 (312-309) after the first two rounds. Coastal Carolina took over the team lead at 1-over par 577 (292-285) while Mississippi dropped to second at 7-over par 583 (290-293). Malene Krolboll Hansen of Coastal Carolina holds the individual lead at 2-under par 142 while four other golfers are tied for second at 1-under par 143.
Junior Lexi Kershaw (Winston-Salem, N.C./Catawba) leads the Spartans in a tie for 28th place overall. Kershaw is 5-over par 149 after 36-holes as she opened with a 4-over par 76 in round one before posting a 1-over par 73 Monday. She tallied four birdies, five bogeys and nine par scores in round two.
“Overall, I played well today ad hit a lot of good shots,” Kershaw said. “I had a strong finish again and was able to bounce back well after a couple of bad holes. I committed really well on my shots and can take that confidence into tomorrow.”
Senior Kristin Powers (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) had the Spartans’ second-best round of the day Monday, posting a 3-over par 75. Powers recorded three birdies and 10 par scores in round two. She sits in a tie for 68th place overall with a 14-over par 158 (83-75).
“Today was a day filled with a lot of committed shots that paid off,” Powers said. “I am really excited to see what we can do as a team tomorrow.”
Freshmen Kendall Dobbins (Summerfield, N.C./Northern Guilford) is tied for 62nd overall with a 12-over par 156. Dobbins opened with a 5-over par 77 in round one before posting a 7-over par 79 in round two with three birdies and eight par scores.
Sophomore Natalia Asensio (Madrid, Spain/Cardenal Spinola) is tied for 68th overall at 14-over par 158 after carding rounds of 76 and 82. Freshman Louisa Tichy (Germering, Germany/Max-Born Gymnasium) rounds out the lineup in 101st place with a 26-over par 170 (86-84).
Joining the Spartans in the tournament include host College of Charleston, Augusta, Boston University, Campbell, Charleston Southern, Chattanooga, Coastal Carolina, Daytona State, Elon, East Tennessee State, Illinois State, Kennesaw State, Mercer, Mississippi, North Florida, Northern Arizona, South Florida, Troy and Xavier.
