ELON, N.C. – The UNCG men’s tennis team fell to No. 49 Elon, 6-1, Wednesday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The Spartans fall to 10-6, 3-2 in Southern Conference play while Elon improves to 13-3 and a perfect 6-0 SoCon mark.
Elon opened the match winning all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. At No. 2 doubles Brian Kowalski and Robert Lindgren took down sophomore Daniel Mack (Lakeland, Fla./Lakeland) and senior Ahmet Sarioglu (Ankera, Turkey/METU Development Foundation), 8-3. The Phoenix clinched the doubles point with a 8-5 win as Stefan Fortmann and Juan Madrid defeated junior Cameron Smith (Jamestown, N.C./Ragsdale) and sophomore Gaston Murray (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) at No. 3 doubles. In the final doubles match, Cameron Silverman and Jordan Kaufman won 8-6 against sophomore James Dougherty (Melbourne, Australia) and junior Randy Phillips (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) at No. 1 doubles.
In singles, Kowalski won in straight sets against Murray, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Fortmann made it 3-0 after defeating Dougherty, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.
Lindgren clinched the victory with a straight sets win at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 7-6 against Phillips. Kaufman made it 5-0 after defeating Mack, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.
Smith gave UNCG its first point with a tough 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 win at No. 6 singles against Ismael Sanchez.
In the final match, Sarioglu lost in a third set super tiebreaker against No. 36 Silverman 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 (10-4) at No. 1 singles.
UNCG will host Southern Conference foes Appalachian State and Davidson this weekend at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
