Annual Athletics Senior Banquet A Success
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG Athletic Department held its annual senior banquet this week at the Sheraton Hotel Imperial Ballroom. The Spartans honored all seniors on the 17 athletic teams at the banquet while also handing out the first-ever Spiro Awards to Best Team, Top Athlete, Top Rookie and the Spartan Award. Additionally, awards were given out for community service hours and UNITY involvement.
The banquet is run by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) with women’s tennis sophomore Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and men’s golf junior Roy Dixon (Salisbury, Md./Salisbury) hosting the evening’s festivities.
The men’s golf team took home the top honor for the Best Team of 2013-14. The golf team finished third at the Southern Conference Championships recently in Pinehurst and is ranked No. 60 in the country. The Spartans are hoping for an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament with the selection show set for Monday, May 5 at 10 a.m. on the Golf Channel during the Morning Drive Show.
Additionally, the men’s golf team also won the Community Service award for having the most time donated on average throughout its team for the fourth year in a row. The Spartans are heavily involved in the First Tee of Carolina as well as the Wyndham Championship.
Senior runner Shaina Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) was named the Top Athlete of the Year, as voted on by the SAAC. Sumney won her first-ever Southern Conference Championship during the indoor track and field season, setting a conference meet record in the 5,000-meter race. She also just finished second in the 5,000-meter distance in outdoor track and hopes to qualify for the NCAA Regionals in May.
Men’s golfer Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) was named the Top Freshman of the Year. Jenkins was the runaway winner of the SoCon Freshman of the Year award and earned All-SoCon honors. Senior runner Shannon Hall (Waldorf, Md./North Point) and senior pitcher Dylan Hathcock (Tampa, Fla./Gaither) were recipients of the Spartan Award. This award is given to the two student-athletes who represent UNCG both in the classroom and on the playing field admirably during their careers while also being quality ambassadors for the university and the greater community.
The women’s cross country team won the UNITY award, which is given to the team that earns the most points in the year-long competition that tracks team support of fellow student-athletes with attendance at events.
