Softball Falls in Doubleheader against Furman
GREENVILLE, S.C. – The UNCG softball team dropped two close games against conference opponent Furman Saturday afternoon at the Pepsi Softball Stadium.
The Spartans falls to 15-20, 3-8 in Southern Conference play while Furman improves to 19-18 overall record and is 6-4 in league play. The series wraps up with a single game Sunday, April 6 at 1 p.m.
Furman 5, UNCG 2
In game one, the Paladins won on a walk-off home run from Hannah Pace in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Lauren Collier improved to 11-9 after throwing a complete game, allowed two earned runs off five hits with five strikeouts. Senior Raeanne Hanks (Rainier, Ore./Rainier Senior) fell to 7-12 on the season after a complete game and gave up five earned runs with six strikeouts.
Sophomore Alison Geiner (Raleigh, N.C./Middle Creek) was 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Spartans.
In the eighth inning, Ambree Muller started the inning with a double to left center. After an out, Collier singled to right field to setup Pace’s walk-off blast to seal the victory for the Paladins.
Furman struck first with two runs on two hits in the first inning. Taylor Jenkins singled to second base with one out and Sieara Bishop followed with a RBI double to right center to give the Paladins a 1-0 lead. After a wild pitch and a walk, Ambree Muller lined a RBI sacrifice fly for the second run.
UNCG tied the game in the third inning after senior Katelyn Bedwell (Surrey, B.C./Elgin Park) roped a two-run double scoring two runs. With one out, junior Dominique Madruga (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) and sophomore Danielle Vega (Rialto, Calif./Aquinas) reached base after being hit by a pitch. Bedwell picked up her 32nd and 33rd RBI of the season off the extra-base hit.
Furman 6, UNCG 5
In game two, the Paladins scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning and held on to sweep the doubleheader against the Spartans, 6-5.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Furman came through with a two out RBI single from Elise Smith that eventually became the game-winning hit.
Alex Sappington threw a complete game improving to 4-1 on the season. Sappington allowed five earned runs off seven hits with five strikeouts. Sophomore Lacey Leary (Norwood, N.C./Spartanburg Methodist) took the loss to fall to 4-3.
Lindsay Thomas went 3-for-3 with a two run home run and three RBI, coming a triple away from the cycle.
UNCG took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after Lindsay Thomas blasted her second home run of the season.
Furman tied the game at 2-2 off two hits in the bottom of the second. Muller leadoff the frame with a solo home run to right centerfield. After back-to-back walks, Pace singled to left center to tie the game at 2-2.
In the top of the fourth, the Spartans scored two runs off a clutch pinch hit two-run double from senior Toni MacReynolds (Vienna, Va./James Madison). Lindsay Thomas roped a one out double to right field and sister Nicole Thomas (Irvine, Calif./Northwood) singled through the left side. After an out, MacReynolds smashed a double to left center to give UNCG a 4-2 advantage.
The Paladins would respond again with three runs off three hits to take a 5-4 lead against the Spartans. Stephanie Spain had a two-run single and Nikki Leg brought home the go ahead run with a swallow hit to centerfield.
In the fifth inning, Lindsay Thomas came through again for UNCG with an RBI single through the left side to tie the game at 5-5.
