GREENSBORO, N.C. – Led by Nadine Soliman’s (Cairo, Egypt/Mokattam Language School) 16 points, the Spartans had a total of five players score in double figures as UNCG defeated the Greensboro College Pride, 82-34 in Fleming Gymnasium Sunday afternoon. Te’ja Twitty (Rutherfordton, N.C./Rutherfordton-Spindale Central), Alexus Willey (Waldorf, Md./Riverdale Baptist), Cece Crudup (Richmond, Va./Highland Springs) and Amesha Miller (Suffolk, Va./King’s Fork) each scored 11 points in the win. The Spartans improve to 2-0 on the season.

“I’m happy with the way we responded today.” Head coach Trina Patterson said, “We got going a little slow, but the second, third and fourth quarters we got things going and got back to playing our style of basketball. Each day, different players have been showing up for us. Today Cece Crudup had a remarkable game off the bench. Her ability to drive and finish at the basket is just going to get better. This was D.J. Howard’s first game for us. She didn’t shoot it as well as she wanted to, but she put in some solid minutes for us and added a lot of energy. We have to be ready to handle our first road trip. We’ll have to handle it with maturity and be ready to play Spartan basketball on Tuesday.”

Twitty and newcomer Ije Ajemba (Lanham, Md./Old Dominion) led the Spartans on the boards. Twitty earned her first double-double of the season, scoring 11 points and grabbing a game-best 14 rebounds. Ajemba brought down 13 rebounds and scored six points in the win. Alexis Pitchford (Orlando, Fla./Winter Park) led the team with four assists, and junior Brandi Fier (South Beloit, Ill./Illinois Central) added three assists and six points.

The Pride wasn’t intimidated by the Spartans in the early going, getting out to a 7-0 lead before UNCG could slow them down. UNCG got its first lead of the contest after Miller sunk a jumper to put UNCG up 15-14. After a Shaniah Haynes layup put the Pride back up one, the Spartans closed the quarter on a 7-0 run, capped by Fier going coast-to-coast with time running out, sinking a layup to put UNCG up 22-16.

UNCG carried that late quarter run over to the next ten minutes as the Spartans outscored Greensboro 20-1 in the second quarter. Willey scored two of UNCG’s three three-pointers in the second quarter as the Spartans had nine bench points in the quarter

Crudup gave UNCG its largest lead of the third quarter at 31. She scored on back-to-back possessions, including grabbing one of her two steals and taking it herself to put UNCG up 31. The Blue and Gold outscored Greensboro 23-6 over the final 10 minutes. Nine of 11 Spartans scored in the final quarter and UNCG shot 69-percent from the field.

UNCG returns to the court Tuesday night at 6 p.m. as it heads to Conway, S.C. for a matchup with the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers.
