PINEHURST, N.C. – The No. 59 UNCG men’s golf team opened the 2014 Southern Conference Championships Sunday and posted a 12-over par 300-team score to sit in sixth place after 18 holes at The National Golf Club in Pinehurst. The Spartans sit just six shots off the overall lead and will tee off Monday for round two between 9:40-10:20 a.m. with live scoring available via www.golfstatresults.com.

The Spartans played the par-72 course at 7,122 yards Sunday in sunny conditions and are one of six teams within six shots of the team lead. UNCG trails co-leaders Davidson and Western Carolina, which posted scores of 6-over par 294 in round one, while Furman and No. 47 Georgia Southern are tied for third overall with an 8-over par 296. Chattanooga, the third nationally ranked team in the SoCon at No. 64, is in fifth place with a 9-over par 297.

Junior Roy Dixon (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) led the way for the Spartans Sunday as he is tied for third overall, three shots off the lead, with a 1-under par 71. Dixon posted three birdies and four bogeys on the afternoon but his highlight came on the par-5 No. 8 hole where he carded an Eagle-3. Dixon trails Western Carolina’s J.T. Poston, the 13th-ranked golfer in the country, after Poston opened with a 4-under par 68 with four birdies and 14 par scores.

Freshman Carter Jenkins (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville Road) is just one shot behind Dixon and is tied for fifth overall after posting an even-par 72 Sunday. Jenkins was consistent throughout the day with third birdies on No. 8, 10 and 15 while posting three bogeys to go along with 12 par scores.

Sophomore Taylor Coalson (Dobson, N.C./North Surry) is tied for 34th overall after posting a 6-over par 78 as he bogeyed his final two holes of play. Sophomore Luke Haithcock (Burlington, N.C./Williams) returned to the lineup for the first time since the Puerto Rico Classic in February and posted a 7-over par 79 to sit in a tie for 39th place overall.

Monday’s round two at The National Golf Club will be played with tee times as the Spartans are set for 9:40-10:20 times in the second round.
