Track & Field Wraps Up Wake Forest Open

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG outdoor track and field program made its annual trip to the Wake Forest Open this weekend at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem. This is event is the second of the outdoor track and field season for the Spartans after the UNCW Seahawk Invitational last week.

Men’s Track
Junior Dylan Belles (Denver, N.C./East Lincoln) was the men’s top finishers, placing third in the 3,000-meter Section 1 race. Belles turned in a personal-best time of 8:40.31, trimming 28 seconds off his time at the same race last year at 9:08.73. Freshman Dakarai Shipp (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook) ran in Section 2 of the 3,000-meter race and placed fourth overall with a  time of 9:01.94.
Senior Tyron Alston (Mebane, N.C./Eastern Alamance) finished ninth overall in the 1,500-meter Invitational Section 1 race with a time of 3:57.54. Sophomore Joshua Crawford (Fayetteville, N.C./South View) placed 10th in the race with a time of 4:01.11.

Women’s Track
Senior Shaina Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) took home the top spot in the 3,000-meter Section 1 race, winning with a time of 9:42.63. This time is a personal-best for Sumney who placed second in the 800-meter race last weekend at UNCW. Sophomore Katherine Link (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) placed seventh in the race with a personal-best time of 10:29.96, surpassing her mark set last season a the same meet (10:36.95). Senior Kelly Montague (Garner, N.C./West Johnston) wrapped up the Spartans in the top 10 of the race with a ninth place showing at 10:37.94.

Senior Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) took part in the 1,500-meter Invitational Section 1 race and placed seventh overall with a time of 4:40.94. Senior Shannon Hall (Waldorf, Md./North Point) ran in Section 2 of the event and placed sixth with a personal-best time of 4:48.37, surpassing last year’s time of 4:50.24.

Rounding out the top Spartans on the weekend was sophomore Katlyn Ayers (Strasburg, Va./Strasburg). Ayers placed fourth in the 1,500 B Section race with a time of 4:49.46.

UNCG returns to the track next weekend for the annual Raleigh Relays held Friday and Saturday.
