GREENSBORO, N.C.-The UNCG women’s tennis team fell to Winthrop 6-1 Tuesday afternoon at the Piedmont Tennis Center.
Winthrop took the first point of the match with two doubles victories. At No. 1 doubles, Alice and Andressa Garcia defeated Kayla Gammie (Port St. Lucie, Fla. /Broward Virtual School) and Devon Sutherland (Lake Wylie, S.C./ Clover) 8-0. Tijana Uzelac and Beth Williamson defeated Stephanie Falcon (Marietta, Ga./Walton) and Soumeya Anane (Coventry, Great Britain/Tile Hill Wood School) 8-3 at No.3 doubles. The No. 2 doubles match between Jamie Grinberg (Chapel Hill, N.C./ East Chapel Hill) and Yasmin Franco (Largo, Fla./Indian Rocks Christian) and Caitlin Cridland and Ekin Gunaysu went unfinished with the score tied at four.
At No. 1 singles, Dilara Yurtkuran (Istanbul, Turkey/ Gunes Koleji) fell to Andressa Garcia 6-2, 6-3 in her first singles match of the season after returning from injury.
Wrapping up second was the No. 5 singles match where Franco lost to Gunaysu 6-3, 6-2.
Gammie fell 6-3, 6-2 to Uzelac at No. 4 singles, who clinched the victory for Winthrop.
In the No. 6 singles match, Monica Aguado took set one 6-4, but Grinberg bounced back and took set two 6-2 to force a third set. Grinberg took set three 1-0 after a 10-6 super tiebreaker victory.
At No.3 singles, Cridland took the first set 6-4, but Falcon charged back in the second to force a tiebreaker. Falcon fought hard in the tiebreaker set two after falling 6-2 in set one. Yet, Cridland managed to end the match after two sets with a 7-6 (12-10) victory at No. 3 singles.
Alice Garcia took set one 6-3 at No. 2 singles, but Anane fought back in set two, winning four straight games to force a third set with a 7-6 (7-4) win. Garcia took the match with a 1-0 set three win after she won the super tiebreaker 10-5.
UNCG will host a pair of SoCon matches this weekend with visits from Wofford and Furman. The Spartans will take on the Terriers Friday at 2 p.m. and battle the Paladins Saturday at noon.
