GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG senior runner Shaina Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity) won her first ever individual Southern Conference championship and she did it in style setting a SoCon Indoor Track & Field Championship meet record by winning the 5,000-meter race Sunday afternoon at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, helping the Spartans to 18 total points in the meet, running almost exclusively in the distance events.

Sumney ran away from the field in the 5,000-meter race, breaking the SoCon Indoor Championship record with a time of 16:39.02, a career-best time for her at the distance. She set the league record by surpassing the previous top time of Dena O’Brien of the College of Charleston set in 2012 at 16:39.47. Her victory secured 10 points for the Spartans in the team standings at the Indoor Championships.

Senior Chelsea Sumney (Washington, Pa./Trinity), Shaina’s twin sister, was the Spartans other top performer in the two-day event. Chelsea secured eight pints for the Spartans as she finished second in the mile race for the second straight year. She turned in a time of 5:00.85 and was narrowly out-touched by Samford’s Lauren D’Alessio for the second straight year (4:58.51).

The 2014 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships are held March 14-15 in Albuquerque, N.M. Additionally, the UNCG track and field team jumps directly into the outdoor season March 14-15 as it travels to UNCW for the Seahawk Invitational.
