Women’s Basketball Closes Regular Season Sunday At Chattanooga
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The UNCG women’s basketball team closes the book on the 2013-14 regular season Sunday afternoon, facing off against regular season champion Chattanooga at McKenzie Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.

The Mocs picked up an 86-53 victory over the Spartans Dec. 14 in Greensboro and look for their 16th-straight win in the series. Chattanooga currently owns the longest active home winning streak in the nation which reached 38 with the Mocs’ 69-55 win over Elon. This season, UTC is 12-0 at home while UNCG owns a 1-11 road record.
The Spartans sit a game behind Wofford for ninth place in the standings entering both teams’ season finales. The Terriers play Davidson at home Sunday.
The Blue and Gold sports a 7-21 overall record and 3-14 league mark after falling to Samford 68-57 Friday in Birmingham. The Spartans are averaging 63.9 points per game and are allowing opponents to score 72.9 points per contest. The Blue and Gold owns a -0.3 margin on the glass, averaging 39.6 rebounds and giving up 39.9 boards per game. The Spartans are second in the league in offensive rebounding at 15.8 per outing. In terms of shooting, UNCG is firing at a 36.1 percent clip from the field, 30.7 percent from beyond the arc and 64.4 percent from the free throw line.
Sophomore guard Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) leads the team in scoring average at 13.1 points per game while senior forward Janae' Stevenson (Columbia, S.C./Eau Claire) paces the Spartans in rebounding average at 7.9 boards per contest. The Blue and Gold uses its bench liberally as nine players have appeared in 26 or more games.
Chattanooga is 25-3 overall and 17-0 in Southern Conference action after downing Elon at home Friday evening. The Mocs are averaging 69.9 points per game while giving up 57.0 per contest. Chattanooga also pulls down 37.6 rebounds per contest while allowing 33.3 - a rebounding margin of +4.4. The Mocs are shooting 44.7 percent from the field, 31.7 percent from deep and 73.0 percent at the free throw line.
Taylor Hall is the top offensive force for Samford, averaging 15.0 points per game and has corralled a team-high average of 8.5 rebounds per contest. The Mocs have won 21-straight contests with their last loss occurring Nov. 30 at Hawai’i by a score of 60-55. Chattanooga, the league’s perrenial power, won its second-straight regular season conference title this season and third in the last five campaigns.
Following the conclusion of Sunday’s league schedule, the SoCon will announce the bracket, pairings and game times for the 2014 Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Championship. The tournament is scheduled for March 7-10 in Asheville, N.C.
