Women’s Hoops Travels To Samford Friday For SoCon Showdown 02-27-2014

GREENSBORO, N.C. – With just two games remaining in the 2013-14 regular season, the UNCG women’s basketball team takes its final road trip of the campaign as the Spartans begin the weekend with a contest Friday in Birmingham against Samford. Tipoff at the Pete Hanna Center is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Bulldogs beat the Blue and Gold 65-52 back on Dec. 16, 2013 at Fleming Gymnasium and look to sweep the season series. UNCG downed Samford 52-51 last year at the Pete Hanna Center in an exciting contest that went down to the final possession. This season, the Bulldogs are 4-6 at home while the Spartans sport a 1-10 road record. Samford leads the all-time series 8-4, including a 4-1 mark in games played in the Magic City.

In this campaign’s earlier meeting, sophomore guard Lucy Mason (Stone Mountain, Ga./Chamblee Charter) paced UNCG with nine points and the Spartans shot just 24 percent from the floor on the way to the 13-point loss.

The Blue and Gold enters Friday’s game with a 7-20 overall record and 3-13 league mark after topping Wofford at home Monday. The Spartans are averaging 64.1 points per game and are allowing opponents to score 73.1 points per contest. The Blue and Gold owns a -0.4 margin on the glass, averaging 39.9 rebounds and giving up 40.3 boards per game. The Spartans are second in the league in offensive rebounding at 15.9 per outing. In terms of shooting, UNCG is firing at a 36.5 percent clip from the field, 31.1 percent from beyond the arc and 64.1 percent from the free throw line.

Mason leads the team in scoring average at 12.8 points per game while senior forward Janae' Stevenson (Columbia, S.C./Eau Claire) paces the Spartans in rebounding average at 7.9 boards per contest. The Blue and Gold uses its bench liberally as nine players have appeared in 25 or more games.

Samford is 9-18 overall and 7-9 in Southern Conference action after falling to Chattanooga 74-67 in double overtime at home Monday. The Bulldogs are averaging 54.8 points per game while giving up 59.6 per contest. Samford also pulls down 31.1 rebounds per contest while allowing 37.4 - a rebounding margin of -6.3. The Bulldogs are shooting 39.4 percent from the field, 31.8 percent from deep and 66.5 percent at the free throw line.

Christy Robinson is the top offensive force for Samford, averaging 9.6 points per game, while Hannah Nichols has corralled a team-high average of 4.2 rebounds per contest. The Bulldogs have lost two consecutive games with their last victory occurring Feb. 15 at Wofford, 61-55. Samford has played well as of late, capturing wins in five of its last seven outings.

UNCG will head to Chattanooga Sunday to wrap up the regular season. The Mocs will celebrate Senior Day in a 2 p.m. tipoff from McKenzie Arena.
