Women’s Basketball To Celebrate Two National Initiatives Feb. 8 02-03-2014

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women's basketball team will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day as well as “Play4Kay” this Saturday, Feb. 8, when the Spartans host Davidson in a Southern Conference matchup at Fleming Gymnasium. Tipoff for the contest is set for 2 p.m.

$1 from every ticket sold for Saturday’s game will benefit the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and pink merchandise will be available for purchase at the spectators’ entrance to Fleming Gymnasium. The first 50 fans in attendance will receive a free “Live Pink” t-shirt and the first 250 fans will be handed pink pom poms.

The UNCG athletics department is also sponsoring a silent auction with all proceeds benefitting the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Featured items for the auction include an autographed Carolina Panthers football, hotel vouchers and free Dominos pizza for a year.

NGWSD began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women's sports. Hyman died of Marfan's Syndrome in 1986 while competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan. Since that time, NGWSD has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and recognize current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation, and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports.

The 2014 Play 4Kay initiative is an opportunity for a nation of coaches to raise breast cancer awareness and funds for research on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. Since its inception in 2007, the Play 4Kay initiative has raised over $2.8 million to support women's cancer research. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund is the official charity of the initiative.
