Women's Basketball Plays Host To Western Carolina
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s basketball team returns home this weekend for a pair of Southern Conference games, beginning with a Friday night meeting with Western Carolina at Fleming Gymnasium. The Spartans have dropped eight of their last nine contests with the lone win occurring Jan. 4 against Elon in Greensboro. The Blue and Gold is 4-5 at home this season while the Catamounts sport a 2-6 ledger on the road. UNCG and Western met twice last year with the Catamounts winning both matchups - 47-44 in Cullowhee and 60-49 at Fleming Gymnasium. WCU holds a 30-25 advantage in the series between the schools and has won the last four matchups. The Spartans are 15-11 against Western Carolina in Greensboro.
The Blue and Gold enters the game with a 5-11 overall record and 1-4 league mark after falling to Davidson 78-59 Jan. 13 at Belk Arena. UNCG fell behind by a large margin midway through the first half and could not recover. The Spartans averaging 64.1 points per game and allowing opponents to average 73.4 points per contest. The Blue and Gold owns a -1.7 margin on the glass, averaging 38.8 rebounds and allowing 40.6 boards per game. The Spartans are tied for the SoCon lead in offensive rebounding at 14.9 per outing. In terms of shooting, UNCG is firing at a 36.0 percent clip from the field, 34.1 percent from beyond the arc and 68.3 percent from the free throw line.
Senior forward Janae' Stevenson (Columbia, S.C./Eau Claire) leads the team in scoring average at 12.3 - good for 10th in the SoCon - and is pulling down a team-best 8.1 rebounds per game. She also has 55 offensive rebounds to her credit. Freshman center Mariah Wilson (Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta) is the team leader in blocked shots with 14. The Spartans use their bench liberally as 11 players have appeared in 14 or more games.
Western Carolina is 8-8 overall and 2-3 in Southern Conference action after defeating Samford 54-50 Jan. 13 at home. The Catamounts average 60.0 points per game while giving up 62.0. WCU averages 37.5 rebounds per game and is getting out-rebounded by 3.2 boards per contest. Lindsay Simpson leads the Catamounts in scoring average with 10.4 points per game while Shauna Terry paces the rebounding efforts at 5.1 boards per contest. The Catamounts are shooting 37.9 percent from the field, 31.5 percent from deep and 61.2 percent at the free throw line.
Following its matchup with Western Carolina, UNCG will host Appalachian State Sunday, Jan. 19, at 2 p.m. inside Fleming Gymnasium.
