Women’s Hoops Makes Short Trip To Davidson Monday Night
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNCG women’s basketball team looks for its first win on the road in Southern Conference play Monday as the Spartans head to Davidson for a 7 p.m. tipoff at Belk Arena.
The Spartans and Wildcats met three times last season and Davidson won all three matchups - including a victory in the SoCon Tournament quarterfinals in Asheville. UNCG comes in having lost seven of its last eight games overall while the Wildcats are winners of two of their last three contests.
The Spartans enter the game with a 5-10 overall record after falling to Georgia Southern 74-71 Saturday at Hanner Fieldhouse. UNCG trailed 37-27 at the break and was able to tie the game in the second half but never take the lead.
The Blue and Gold is averaging 64.4 points per game and allowing opponents to average 73.1 points per contest. The Blue and Gold owns a -2.1 margin on the glass, averaging 38.1 rebounds and allowing 40.3 boards per game. The Spartans are second in the SoCon in offensive rebounding at 14.7 per outing. In terms of shooting, UNCG is firing at a 36.3 percent clip from the field, 35.0 percent from beyond the arc and 68.6 percent from the free throw line. Senior forward Janae' Stevenson (Columbia, S.C./Eau Claire) leads the team in scoring average at 12.7 - good for ninth in the SoCon - and is pulling down a team-best 8.2 rebounds per game. She also has 52 offensive rebounds to her credit. Freshman center Mariah Wilson (Atlanta, Ga./North Atlanta) is the team leader in blocked shots with 13. The Spartans use their bench liberally as 11 players have appeared in 13 or more games.
Davidson is 7-9 overall and 4-1 in Southern Conference action after defeating Elon 67-62 Saturday afternoon at Belk Arena. The Wildcats are second in the league in scoring offense with an average of 68.7 points, but Davidson is also giving up a SoCon worst 74.5. Davidson averages 34.9 rebounds per game and is getting out-rebounded by 6.8 boards per contest. Senior Laura Murray averages a team-best 18.9 points per game while Hannah Early and Dakota Dukes check in at 14.7 and 13.1 points per contest respectively. The Wildcats are shooting 41.2 percent from the field, 35.1 percent from deep and 70.3 percent at the free throw line.
UNCG leads the series with Davidson 28-19. The Wildcats have won six-straight meetings between the teams as the last Spartan victory occurred Dec. 31, 2010 at Belk Arena by the score of 59-58. In last season’s contest in Davidson, the Wildcats cruised to an 88-48 victory.
Following its matchup with Davidson, the Blue and Gold returns home to host Western Carolina Friday, January 17 at 7 p.m. inside Fleming Gymnasium.
